Shawn Mendes’ New Single Reveals the Singer ‘Was About to Be a Father’; Here’s All You Need to Know

As a dedicated fan of Shawn Mendes, I find his latest release, Why Why Why, absolutely captivating. This song, a sneak peek into his upcoming album Shawn, resonates with me on a deeper level due to its raw and emotional portrayal of fatherhood and love. The bridge where he sings about believing he was about to become a father, followed by “I’m still a kid,” strikes a chord in my heart, reminding me of the innocence and vulnerability we all carry within us, regardless of our age or status.

Currently, Shawn Mendes is exploring themes related to fatherhood through his music. His latest release, titled “Why Why Why,” dropped on August 9th, serving as a preview for his upcoming fifth album simply named ‘Shawn.’

In this upbeat song, Mendes expresses his belief that he was on the verge of fatherhood in the chorus. The line, “I thought I was about to be a father,” showcases the depth of his feelings, followed by, “It left me shaken to my very core, I’m still just a kid.”

The melody portrays an intimate love story that he wished could have blossomed more, yet it didn’t work out. Unfortunately, Mendes doesn’t reveal the identity of his former lover or provide specifics about their past.

In my upcoming conversation with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, I’ll be discussing why I chose authenticity in my artistic endeavors. I believe there were essentially two paths: truth-telling or deception. Regarding the potential unreleased song, I feel that dancing around the subject would have been fruitless.

He acknowledges that he had two clear choices: “to openly express my authentic self or to tiptoe around it.” Dancing around it seemed senseless to him, even if the outcome was that the piece would never be shared.

As a devoted follower, I’d like to share that Mendes expresses his experience of confronting the truth directly. For him, this was not just a significant step in his career as a composer, but also on a personal level as a man. He finds it liberating because he can now be more upfront and transparent.

He expresses, “I exclaimed, ‘What are we doing circling this issue?’ Indeed, it seemed like I had stepped over a significant boundary. I believe it feels incredibly empowering, even just to be in an environment where I’ve tackled that as a writer. Now, I feel more liberated as a person to continue doing so.”

Mendes often found that the intense anxiety he felt whenever he expressed truth in his songs served as a catalyst for his creativity. In fact, when he became particularly anxious during the album creation process, it was humorously referred to as a sign of impending good music within the studio. He and his team viewed this anxiety as a therapeutic tool or a method for tapping into something deep and profound.

During the process of creating our album, we developed an amusing running joke: whenever I felt intense anxiety in the studio, everyone was convinced that a fantastic song would follow, as if going through some kind of emotional upheaval or creative breakthrough was necessary for a great track.
