As a dedicated follower of Shawn Mendes‘ journey, it’s truly heartening to see him grow and evolve with each passing day. His recent conversation with John Mayer is a testament to his maturity, humility, and self-awareness. The wisdom he has gained from his two-year mental health hiatus, and the work on his upcoming album, seems to have given him a unique perspective on life that is both inspiring and relatable.
Shawn Mendes admits that he’s learning more as he gets older, as discussed during a chat with Interview magazine on October 14. In this conversation with fellow artist John Mayer, the 25-year-old singer opened up about taking a break for mental health reasons over the past two years, his upcoming album, and his path towards self-discovery and improved self-confidence.
In the course of their conversation, Mendes revealed that working on his newest album has brought him closer to himself more deeply than any other experience. He underscored, “This record has offered me far more than any of my earlier albums combined, and I haven’t even shared it with others yet.
Mendes shared with Mayer, aged 46, that he has recently discovered a sense of humor in embracing his own identity. He expressed to the guitarist that lately, he feels like waking up as Shawn Mendes rather than playing the part, and there’s less pressure about being overly serious about himself.
Mendes attributed therapy for helping him delve into his revamped and recovered identity, which, in his words, is no longer “as intense” now.
If someone were to ask Mendes, “What, in your opinion, is the main cause of your current overall happiness?”, he would promptly respond that therapy comes first, followed by taking things less seriously about himself.
In simpler terms, Mayer conveyed to Mendes, “I want to make it clear this doesn’t belittle your experiences, but what you’ve struggled with appears to be a normal part of growing up and understanding life.
The more experienced singer explained to the young lady singer: “However, your sensitivity to situations can sometimes come across as if everything is an urgent crisis. But let me assure you, there’s nothing wrong with the path you’re on.” Mayer further commented, “The thought of turning this into a song excites me greatly.
Mendes’ upcoming album, Shawn, comes out on Friday, November 15.
