Shawn Levy’s Star Wars Movie Progresses as Rey’s Film Hits a Roadblock, Rumors Suggest

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the Star Wars universe, I can’t help but feel like a Jedi waiting for their next mission. The lineup of upcoming movies is nothing short of exhilarating, with familiar faces like Mando and Grogu, newcomers such as those led by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Dave Filoni, and the long-awaited return of Lando.

Multiple thrilling Star Wars productions are underway, such as “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” scheduled for release on May 22, 2026, under the direction of Jon Favreau. Additionally, there are projects from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni, James Mangold, and Taika Waititi in the pipeline, some of which are still being developed.

In addition to the movie starring Donald Glover as Lando, there’s also Rogue Squadron directed by Patty Jenkins, along with films from Shawn Levy and Rian Johnson in the pipeline. However, updates on these projects have been scarce lately, particularly since the announcement of a new Star Wars trilogy helmed by Simon Kinberg.

In his latest reports, Daniel Richtman shared some rumors about three upcoming movies.

It’s accurate that, as per Jeff Sneider, the Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars film has been given priority over other projects, with the upcoming Rey movie temporarily delayed. The Mangold project is currently awaiting further script development.

Let’s break this down. In November 2022, it was reported that Shawn Levy was in talks to direct a Star Wars film after working on ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Stranger Things.’ However, in September 2023, Levy mentioned that the movie’s development started but got delayed due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. After the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ Levy confirmed he is still actively working on the film, which isn’t surprising.

From another perspective, there’s been nothing but unfavorable updates concerning Rey’s movie. Recent reports indicate that production has halted following the departure of the writer and Knight from the project. Moreover, the specific role Rey will take in the upcoming trilogy by Kinberg remains undetermined, and while hints about her future in the series are being dropped, the whispers surrounding it are not encouraging.

Regarding Mangold’s movie, there’s no speculation here as Mangold provided an update himself only a week ago. He and Beau Willimon are still in the process of refining the script and haven’t wrapped it up yet, which means the future remains uncertain. Furthermore, they are dedicated to finalizing the script before proceeding with subsequent stages.
