Shawn Levy is working on a brand new Star Wars movie, currently titled Star Wars: Starfighter. It’s a standalone story and isn’t connected to any of the existing films as a sequel, prequel, or spin-off.
The new movie, featuring Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams, will be released in theaters on May 28, 2027. Lucasfilm and 21 Laps Entertainment are producing it, and Walt Disney Studios will distribute the film.
I first heard about Simon Levy potentially directing this film back in November 2022, but things hit a snag when the writers’ strike shut down development in 2023. It’s good to see the project moving forward now that that’s resolved.
Jonathan Tropper started working on the screenplay in July 2024. News about Ryan Gosling joining the cast and the movie’s title came out in April 2025. Filming began in August in the United Kingdom, and some scenes were also shot in Sardinia, Italy, with the complete cast announced at that time.
While promoting the last season of Stranger Things, director Shawn Levy told Collider’s Steve Weintraub how enthusiastic he is about his new project. He explained they’re aiming for a specific feel throughout the film, and working with Ryan Gosling, along with cinematographer Claudio Miranda, has been a fantastic experience. He even said it feels like a childhood dream come true to be working on it.
He’s actually flying back to the set tonight so filming can continue on Monday. It’s a really exciting chance because Lucasfilm has been incredibly supportive of me trying something different. They haven’t asked me to simply copy what’s been done before, or feel tied to past work – they genuinely appreciate the history of the project.
I was really struck by what Levy had to say about Claudio Miranda, the cinematographer. He called him an incredible asset to the Star Wars films. Beyond just his obvious talent – you can see it in movies like Life of Pi and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – Levy explained that Claudio is a total innovator. He actually calls him ‘the Professor’ because he loves the technical side of filmmaking, really digging into the prep work. He’s the kind of guy who designs custom camera setups and experiments with lenses and formats to come up with something new.
His incredibly inventive approach is a major asset to this Star Wars film, which aims to be visually groundbreaking and deliver an exciting, immersive experience. He demonstrated this talent in Top Gun: Maverick and F1, creating a uniquely visceral feeling of being in the action – not just watching it, but truly experiencing it from the pilot’s or driver’s perspective. He’s unmatched in his ability to do this, and that’s what I wanted to bring to Starfighter.
Set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, the new film Starfighter is being kept secret, with details closely guarded. It’s expected to deliver exciting action and stunning visuals, offering a fresh experience for Star Wars fans.
Directed by Levy and starring Gosling, the new Star Wars: Starfighter promises a familiar yet innovative story within the iconic Star Wars universe.
