Shang-Chi’s Secret: The Key to Reviving Black Panther in the MCU!

The character known as T’Challa, or Black Panther, holds a significant role within Marvel Comics and beyond. Originally created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, he was one of the first black superheroes to appear in mainstream comics, preceding characters like Sam Wilson, Storm, and Green Lantern John Stewart from DC. Although other individuals have taken up the mantle of Black Panther, it’s always returned to T’Challa. His importance cannot be overstated. However, Chadwick Boseman’s unfortunate death in 2020 presented challenges for Marvel Studios regarding T’Challa’s future. Yet, his young son, T’Challa II, who debuted in the movie “Wakanda Forever,” could potentially step into the role of Black Panther. The key to this lies within the storyline of Shang-Chi.

In less technical language: Black Panther, a Marvel Comics hero named T’Challa, is very important and was one of the first black superheroes in mainstream comics. Other characters have taken his place as Black Panther, but it usually comes back to him. His son, T’Challa II, may soon follow in his footsteps, thanks to a story involving Shang-Chi. Unfortunately, Chadwick Boseman, who played Black Panther, died in 2020, causing problems for Marvel Studios about what to do with the character.

2020 marked a profound loss with Chadwick Boseman’s demise, an impact still deeply felt today. As a tribute to the groundbreaking actor who brought T’Challa to life in live-action, Marvel opted against recasting the character. This decision has sparked ongoing discussions among fans about its merit, conversations that could continue ad infinitum. However, it appears that the idea of recasting T’Challa has now been put to rest.

In “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, we learned that T’Challa succumbed to an undisclosed illness within the MCU, leaving his sister Shuri to take over as Black Panther. The film concluded with a surprising twist: T’Challa and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) had a son named T’Challa II, who goes by the legal name of Toussaint in private life. His mother is currently nurturing him in secret in Haiti, but when he reaches maturity, he will be ready to ascend the throne of Wakanda.

It’s clear that by introducing T’Challa II, Marvel is striking a perfect balance – keeping Chadwick Boseman’s legacy alive while still developing a new Black Panther character. The young T’Challa we saw in ‘Wakanda Forever’ isn’t old enough to take up the mantle yet, so Marvel won’t likely wait two decades for him to become the Black Panther. Instead, they’ve already set the stage for T’Challa II by introducing him in ‘Shang-Chi’. This way, they can have a new Black Panther now, who is T’Challa’s son and namesake, without resorting to another Multiversal duplicate.

In the movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, we’re introduced to a unique dimension called Ta Lo. Unlike a parallel universe in Earth-616, Ta Lo exists within the Sacred Timeline as a separate pocket dimension. Here, time flows differently. At present, only a select few are cognizant of Ta Lo’s existence, with Shang-Chi and his companion Katy being among them. They have shared this knowledge with Wong, Captain Marvel, and Bruce Banner, making it likely that the people of Wakanda are now also informed about it. It’s possible that they were already aware, but given this information, we might expect to see T’Challa II sent there for training purposes and protection.

If his identity were revealed, potential adversaries of Wakanda could try to harm Toussaint. However, it’s extremely improbable that they would ever consider searching for him in a place that is largely considered mythical by many. Furthermore, accessing this location is challenging and possible only once a year. Due to the unique time mechanics of Ta Lo, T’Challa II could enter as a 7-year-old child but exit as a fully grown adult prepared to assume the role of the Black Panther. This approach allows other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects to maintain their current timelines without needing an older version of T’Challa II.

In this new twist, the MCU could introduce a part of T’Challa’s comic book background that they initially left out in the movies. Instead of learning from the world before becoming king as depicted in the comics, T’Challa (or T’Challa II) will train abroad in the mystical realm of Ta Lo. Since this dimension is far removed from our reality, it offers a unique setting for his education. Although the original MCU version didn’t require this aspect, incorporating it into T’Challa II’s storyline would serve as a nod to the comics. This change also means that elements of the comic book T’Challa are now being divided between father and son in the live-action series, adding depth and complexity to their characters.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve noticed an intriguing pattern among soap operas, comic books, and television series: they seem to have a peculiar dislike for young children. They’re adorable for a moment, but the creators are quick to age them up. Shows like General Hospital are no exception. Infants born on the show would often disappear for years, only to reappear as teenagers after spending time at boarding school (interestingly, their parents remained ageless). The same trend can be seen in comic books, with characters like Cyclops and Jean Grey’s son, Nathan from the X-Men. He was a baby for a short while before being sent to the future and returning as the adult hero Cable. Even the TV series Angel followed suit. In this series, the vampire hero’s infant son vanished into another dimension, only to reappear a few episodes later as a teenager. It seems this pattern has become a familiar trope in these narratives.

It’s likely that Shuri will appear again as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, we think it’s plausible that a character named T’Challa might don the vibranium suit in the coming years. The release date for Black Panther III isn’t confirmed yet, but it may not be shown in theaters until after Marvel finishes The Multiverse Saga. During Phase 5, Marvel Studios could offer a post-credits scene for the anticipated Shang-Chi sequel. This could involve citizens of Ta Lo welcoming young T’Challa II to their world, setting up the third Black Panther film with T’Challa II already established as the new Black Panther, ready to take over the throne and the title.
