Worldwide, Netflix’s series “Shadow and Bone” has garnered a devoted fanbase reminiscent of cult status, as an increasing number of Grishaverse enthusiasts become enamored with the show’s extensive roster of characters striving to protect Ravka from some of the darkest adversaries ever depicted in fiction. While certain main characters gain superhuman abilities thanks to their Grisha powers (becoming both heroes and villains), it’s essential to note that these powers do not solely define each character’s strength within “Shadow and Bone“.
Characters such as Nikolai Lantsov and Inej Ghafa prove their power not through supernatural abilities but through their sheer determination and resourcefulness. In the world of the Grishaverse, survival often requires more than brute force. When compiling our list of the top ten powerful characters from the series, we prioritized their resilience, ingenuity, and the significant impact they had on each major conflict depicted in the show.
10. Nina Zenik
As a movie reviewer, I must confess that the character of Nina Zenik in this production hasn’t quite showcased the full extent of her power as hinted at in the book. However, what she lacks in raw power, she more than makes up for with her unyielding determination to survive and her fierce devotion to those she holds dear.
In a remarkable turn of events, Nina successfully transforms a fanatical Fjerdan Zealot into a rational individual and a lover. This transformation is a testament to her charm and persuasive abilities. Despite facing an entire legal system that seems determined to thwart her efforts, she continues to fight for this unlikely ally, demonstrating an unwavering spirit.
This character’s journey is truly captivating, offering a unique blend of strength, resilience, and compassion that sets her apart from many other characters in the story. Nina Zenik is not just a fighter; she is a beacon of hope, proving that love can conquer even the most insurmountable odds.
1) Nina significantly contributed to The Dregs’ triumph over Pekka Rollins and their subsequent reclaiming of The Crow club in Ketterdam. What makes Zenik stand out is that she rarely requires much persuasion to act ethically, and promptly engages in fights for noble causes. She double-crossed the Second Army and left Kirigan’s employment when she discerned their moral compasses didn’t align with hers.
9. Inej Ghafa
In her youth, Inej honed her agility as a circus acrobat until she was abducted by slave traders and forced into sexual servitude under Tante Heleen. Despite the hardships, Inej’s spirit remained undaunted, utilizing her talents to secure employment from Kaz and emerging as one of Ketterdam’s most formidable combatants. She would later use her acrobatic prowess to move stealthily and accurately throw knives, earning the moniker The Wraith.
When it was her turn to aid Alina in overcoming The Darkling, Inej brandished the sword of Neshyenyer with honor and played a crucial role in vanquishing The Fold, thus solidifying herself as an authentic legend. What further enhances her standing among the most formidable characters in the series is the fact that she is not a Grisha.
8. Zoya
Zoya valiantly battled and perished while defending Kirigan, which was unfortunate since she possessed immense power that could have been channeled more productively if she had sided with Alina. Her abilities as a Squaller made her an incredibly formidable antagonist in the series, second only to Kirigan himself.
Apart from being adept at Squaller skills, Zoya was also an astute military tactician, often outsmarting Nikolai Lantsov and coming close to securing victory for Kirigan, had it not been for The Dregs’ intervention. However, her actions were largely driven by jealousy and hatred, which ultimately made her a poor leader as her negative emotions eventually took over.
7. David Kostyk
In the novel “Shadow and Bone,” Kostyk is reminiscent of the legendary figure Morozova due to this resemblance, he’s included on our list. Kostyk possessed immense Durast power, but what truly set him apart was his extraordinary creativity. This brilliant scientist had the ability to design tools that tackled an array of challenges.
In his role as Kirigan’s faithful assistant, Kostyk’s duties seemed to hinder rather than enhance his abilities. However, he more than compensated when he assisted Alina in defeating Kirigan and saved Genya’s life. Kostyk was a master at solving Grisha problems, and the tools he invented proved indispensable. Where David lacked in combat skills, he made up for through his research and compassionate nature.
6. Kaz Brekker
Kaz may not be Grisha, but throughout the series, he’s shown himself to be a stronger adversary than some of the show’s most lethal antagonists, regardless of whether they were Grisha or not. Kaz always enters a fight well-prepared, and when battles become too challenging for his team, as demonstrated in Sankt Neyer, he consistently finds ways to tip the scales in his favor. He is the true leader, never allowing his vulnerabilities to rob him of what rightfully belongs to him.
Keep in mind that his injured leg doesn’t diminish his threat level during a fight. In fact, Kaz possesses an uncanny ability to read people and discern their intentions more accurately than many others. Moreover, his exceptional leadership skills are highly valued by Inej, Jasper, and Nina as he enhances their fighting capabilities and boosts their chances of victory.
5. Genya Safin
Genya is a formidable fighter and survivor whose full strength and abilities aren’t shown in “Shadow and Bone.” She survived years of sexual abuse while living at the Small Palace, yet never wavered from her mission. In an impressive act, she ultimately poisoned the wicked king. Unfortunately, Genya was manipulated by Kirigan to further his sinister goals, but when she discovered the truth, Genya joined forces with the heroes and fought against him.
She often found herself as a victim, with her pureness consistently manipulated and misused against her throughout the series. A confrontation with Kirigan’s shadow troops resulted in physical scars, including losing an eye, but her indomitable will remained undiminished. Despite her hardships, she stands among the most potent Heartrenders on the show, playing a significant part in shaping the nation’s destiny.
4. Baghra
Baghra acknowledged past errors, including failing to stop the Darkling earlier due to their mother-son bond. However, it made sense given the circumstances. Once she understood her son was irredeemable, she aided Alina and Mal extensively in defeating him. Crucially, in the second season, Baghra disclosed to Mal that he was the Firebird.
Removing Kirigan’s arm with the cut significantly diminished his strength, allowing Alina to ultimately defeat him. Although Baghra possessed almost equal power as Kirigan, she opted to serve and aided other Grisha in realizing their abilities. She even assisted Genya in fleeing from Kirigan’s captivity. The most significant sacrifice made in the show was Baghra’s life, which she gave up so that her own son would be defeated.
3. Jasper Fahey
Jasper, despite never receiving formal training, effortlessly displays his abilities as a Durast, proving his innate power. He also faced a challenging upbringing, having lost his mother at a tender age, but he emerged as a resilient individual, filled with empathy and an infectious sense of humor.
Despite the fact that his Durast abilities enable him to deliver flawless shots with his revolvers, it’s fair to say that he is unquestionably the top gunslinger in Grishaverse. When he harnessed his Grisha powers during the climactic battle against Kirigan’s Second Army, he easily overpowered Zoya, who had dedicated her entire life to training in the Small Palace. As such, with some additional training, he could potentially become the most powerful Durast in the series.
2. The Darkling
Given The Darkling’s role in creating the barrier that separated Ravka for such a long time, it’s clear that his powers as a Grisha were immense. To illustrate this, consider the fact that he single-handedly beheaded an entire Fjerdan army with a mere use of his abilities. This demonstrates that he was the most powerful Grisha prior to Alina obtaining her amplifiers. Such power was essential for him to command the Shadow Army and relocate the Fold at will during his travels.
Through blinded judgement by hate and greed, he chose poorly, a choice that ultimately undermined him, particularly after employing Merzost. Despite this, he remained a formidable adversary, even managing to overpower Baghra who shared his power. Alina Starkov became the Darkling’s greatest vulnerability due to his unrelenting obsession with her. Kirigan misjudged Alina and the might of the virtuous individuals in her circle, a mistake that ultimately led to his demise.
1. Alina Starkov
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself captivated by the protagonist’s journey in this film. Alina, an orphan, found solace in Mal, who was the closest thing to family she had ever known. Unbeknownst to her, she was the Sun Summoner, a revelation that brought with it a daunting responsibility – the salvation of an entire nation.
What truly sets Alina apart is her ability to maintain perspective amidst her extraordinary powers. Unlike many in her position, she never allowed her abilities to inflate her ego or underestimate her adversaries, such as Kirigan and his army. This humility, I believe, was the key to her resilience and ultimately, her triumph.
Alina’s knack for creating alliances is yet another trait of a formidable leader, which she demonstrates exceptionally well. She accepted the prince’s offer without abandoning Mal and furthermore, she successfully gathered Baghra, David, Genya, and numerous other Grisha to aid her in vanquishing the Darkling. Although the amplifiers made her the most powerful Grisha on the show, it was her ability to unite the entire nation through love that truly established her as the most influential woman within the country.
