As a dedicated fan of the Grishaverse and having read both Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows novels by Leigh Bardugo, I cannot help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement as I watch the second season of Shadow and Bone unfold on my screen. The addition of the Six of Crows, including Nina Zenik, Matthias Helvar, and Wylan Van Eck, to the storyline is a delightful treat for fans like me.
In the second installment of Shadow and Bone, the Six of Crows team expands with the additions of Nina Zenik, Matthias Helvar, and Wylan Van Eck. Nina and Wylan team up with Inej and Jesper to collaborate under Kaz’s command, while Matthias remains locked up throughout the entire season. Unfortunately, the intriguing plotline of the Crows executing their notorious heist at the Ice Court won’t reach completion due to Shadow and Bone being canceled.
The production blends elements of Six of Crows’ plot, such as insights from the Ice Court expedition, Wylan’s past, and Nina and Matthias’ reunion. Nevertheless, the novels and their follow-up Crooked Kingdom present a distinct viewpoint on the Crows’ reasons for acting, their personal connections, and gratifying victories.
1. Kaz Brekker
Kaz, a masterfully deceptive swindler, keeps audiences guessing with his unpredictable actions and unexpected revelations. The apparent deceit towards the Conductor by the Crows in the production mirrors instances where adversaries believed they held the advantage. In the end, Kaz executes an intricate scheme to rise as Ketterdam’s most influential criminal mastermind, paying a heavy price for those who have crossed him.
Kaz is given an opportunity to infiltrate the Ice Court and rescue scientist Bo Yul-Bayur for a hefty sum of 30 million kruge. Driven by the promise of this significant compensation, Kaz gathers a team to wreak havoc on Pekka Rollins. Rollins had once ruined Kaz and his brother Jordie’s lives by swindling them out of their savings, leading to their unfortunate demise. With a new identity and as a member of the Dregs gang, Kaz has spent years plotting his revenge. The reward money represents the next crucial step on his long-term quest for retribution.

2. Jesper Fahey
Jesper, hidden Grisha and an expert marksman, gets invited by Kaz in Ketterdam following his arrival. Raised in Novyi Zem, Jesper left university prematurely to settle debts by working for the criminal underworld. The Ice Court heist’s proceeds are crucial for him as he is deeply in debt and had used his father’s farm as collateral for a loan.
Jesper is renowned for his skill in shaping metal and plays a significant role in Kaz’s tale. Tragically, his mother sacrificed her Grisha powers, taking her life instead. His father imparted upon him the importance of concealing his abilities. Additionally, Jesper shares a bond with Wylan, another Crows member, though their storyline deviates from the books.
3. Inej Ghafa
Inej, an agile acrobat, was seized by slave traders and forced into prostitution at Ketterdam’s brothels. Kaz Brekker acquired her contract, enabling her to serve under the Dregs. The adaptation alters Inej’s narrative, minimizing violence and introducing a brother figure who sold her into slavery, despite her past as a formidable assassin in the original novels. However, the source text makes no mention of such a sibling.
Inej has the chance to settle her debts completely through Kaz’s planned Ice Court robbery, leaving a substantial sum for her to begin anew once freed. During the heist, she suddenly feels drawn to the idea of owning and commanding her own ship, leading a crew against slavers. However, in Shadow and Bone season 2, Inej ends up joining Sturmhond’s crew instead of captaining her own vessel. The series incorporates aspects of Kaz and Inej’s romance, including specific lines from their dialogue.
4. Nina Zenik
Before joining Crows/Ketterdam, Nina was part of a Grisha mission with the Second Army. However, events unfolded differently than in the original timeline. During this mission, Nina got captured by the Fjerdans instead of staying with her comrades. Subsequently, she and Matthias, a Fjerdan drüskelle (soldier), were shipwrecked together. Over time, they fell deeply in love. One day, when Nina was faced with danger, she mistakenly accused Matthas of kidnapping her to protect her. This led to his arrest by the Kerch authorities rather than the Second Army.
After that, Nina moves to Ketterdam and stays there until she figures out a plan to save Matthias from Hellgate Prison. She eventually becomes part of the Dregs. It isn’t until Kaz requires Matthias’ expertise on the Ice Court that he hatches a scheme to assist Nina in rescuing him. Together, they embark on a mission to infiltrate the Ice Court. However, they come to the conclusion that it would not benefit either of their countries if Yul-Bayur survived, so instead of freeing him, they plot to eliminate him.

5. Matthias Helvar
Matthias, born in Fjerda, initially regards the Grisha as wicked monstrosities. However, upon encountering Nina, a Grisha herself, he recognizes her humanity. Yet, his convictions are shattered when she apprehends him. To earn a pardon, Matthias teams up with Kaz and the Crows. Nevertheless, their allegiance is put to the test as they learn of Yul-Bayur’s jurdam parem drug, which enhances Grisha abilities but proves addictive. Fearing the potential consequences, Nina and Matthias make a decision to terminate the scientist responsible for creating this dangerous concoction, in order to prevent further power amplification among the Grisha.
The target’s demise thwarts their scheme, revealing him to be an innocent teenage boy instead. After fleeing Ice Court, Nina and Matthias stay true to Kaz to evade capture and conceal the Jurda Parem secrets. Their bond is rekindled, leading them to reunite as a couple. Matthias gains fresh insights about the Grisha. However, in the turmoil of Crooked Kingdom’s climax, he falls to an enemy Fjerdan soldier’s blade.
6. Wylan Van Eck
In the second installment of Shadow and Bone, we encounter Wylan “Hendricks,” a character introduced as the son of merchant Kaz. Due to a learning disability that hinders his ability to read, Kaz doubts Wylan’s potential to carry on their business. After Kaz remarries and makes attempts on Wylan’s life, he is forced to leave home. Wylan then finds himself navigating the streets of Ketterdam.
I myself have a strong background in science which comes in handy when I manufacture explosives on occasion. Sometimes, I supply these products to Kaz for various reasons. Kaz, in turn, brings Wylan into the Ice Court due to his potential value as leverage against his own father. Together with Jesper, we live quite comfortably in a grand house that once belonged to Wylan’s father. However, my past actions came back to haunt me when I was arrested at the end of Crooked Kingdom. Kaz exposed my corrupt business dealings and left me facing the consequences.
