Emma Mackey is returning to the fantasy genre, swapping Barbie’s world for that of Narnia this time around. Known for her roles in Sex Education and Barbie, she has been chosen to portray the White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming Netflix adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia.
This signifies that Mackey and Gerwig are reuniting for a new project, having collaborated earlier on the 2023 hit movie Barbie. The director is responsible for the script and will be in charge of directing this upcoming film, said to be based on The Magician’s Nephew, the sixth book in C.S. Lewis’ fantasy series. In this prequel story, the character of The White Witch, also known as Jadis, holds significant importance. This role was originally portrayed by Tilda Swinton in the 2005 adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
In the upcoming movie, Mackey will act alongside Meryl Streep, who’s currently negotiating her role as Aslan, the revered lion and central protector of Narnia. The film is slated for a premiere in IMAX theaters on Thanksgiving Day 2026, enjoying an exclusive two-week cinema run before streaming on Netflix around Christmas time.
2020 saw Greta Gerwig becoming a part of the Narnia project, having recently achieved critical acclaim through films like Lady Bird and Little Women. Her success was further cemented with the blockbuster hit Barbie, which she directed shortly before its release. In that modern take on the classic toy, Mackey portrayed one of the characters, appearing alongside stars such as Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
In other realms, Mackey’s stardom remains on an upward trajectory. She is poised to feature in J.J. Abrams’ next Warner Bros. production, sharing the screen with Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega. Moreover, she will make her debut at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in Julia Ducournau’s Alpha. Additionally, she will headline James L. Brooks’ Ella McCay, due for release this December through 20th Century Studios.
Emma Mackey is set to take on the roles previously held by Jadis and Greta Gerwig, with Netflix’s Narnia remake offering a revitalized, visually striking portrayal of Lewis’ classic realm. Fantasy enthusiasts, feminists, and those who appreciate formidable antagonists have much to anticipate.
