Candace Bushnell, best known as the creator of Sex and the City, is sharing personal stories from her life in a one-woman show called Candace Bushnell: Tales of Sex, Success and Sex in the City. She recently told People magazine that many events in the popular HBO series were based on her own experiences, and she says people are often surprised to learn what’s actually true.
Candace Bushnell, the author who inspired Sex and the City, said the character Carrie Bradshaw was initially based on her own life. She explained that her stage show reveals which parts of the series were actually drawn from her personal experiences, especially a segment called “Real or Not Real.”
I learned from Candace Bushnell that the characters Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha, and Miranda are all inspired by her own life, especially when the show first started. She said Carrie Bradshaw was really based on her, at least in the beginning, but then the character took on a life of its own, which is exactly what you want to see happen! Interestingly, some storylines weren’t pulled from her personal experiences at all. She actually didn’t end up with her own version of Mr. Big, though she does share the story of how they broke up.
Bushnell created the show while the world was dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. She initially thought writing and performing a one-person play was unrealistic, especially without industry connections. However, she pushed forward and eventually performed her show internationally, with successful runs at venues like Café Carlyle and a sold-out engagement at The London Palladium. She also shared that the creative process held unexpected surprises along the way.
The show offers a unique look behind the scenes, revealing the real-life moments that sparked one of TV’s most beloved series. Through Bushnell’s stories, viewers discover that Carrie Bradshaw’s on-screen adventures are often based on the creator’s own experiences, even though they were adapted for television.
