In the sixth episode of Severance Season 2, fans were given closure on the growing romantic tension between Mark S. and Helly R., a moment that was deeply impactful for both characters due to their strong connection throughout the series. Adam Scott, the actor portraying Mark, called the scene well-earned and emotionally satisfying in an interview with The Wrap.
Scott emphasized that this instance held significant importance for Mark’s emotional progression, as he noted, “Things are becoming quite complex for Inner Mark, as he appears to be deeply drawn towards Helly.
In Mark’s perspective, their time spent in the wilderness significantly strengthened their bond, almost finalizing it. This connection proved crucial in deepening Mark’s affection towards Helly, particularly during his quest to uncover truths about his wife, Gemma, who was also known as Ms. Casey.
The close interaction between Mark and Helly in Severance Episode 6 stood out starkly against an earlier event in Episode 4, which involved Helena instead of Helly. In Episode 4, Mark found himself unknowingly getting intimate with the ‘outie’ version of Helly, Helena. This discovery was a significant betrayal for both characters.
Scott highlighted that the two situations were distinctly dissimilar, labeling them as “different scenarios.” He further clarified, “One of these instances portrays a shocking act of deception, whereas the other represents the emotional peak of a gradually intensifying love story.
Later on, Mark admitted to Helly about the incident, but her reaction was unforeseen. Rather than getting upset at him, she came to understand that Helena had deceived her as well. This insight prompted Helly to share more with Mark, ultimately strengthening their connection.
In a conversation with Variety, actress Britt Lower (playing the role of Helly) expressed that the scene in Episode 6 provided a powerful boost for her character. She referred to it as a moment where Helly takes back control over her own body and personal decisions.
She mentioned that it took courage for Helly to express her desire directly to Mark. Moreover, she pointed out that Helly’s action was linked to her underlying apprehensions. She explained that while Helly is rarely unsettled by anything, the idea of opening her heart to connection, not just with Mark, but also with Dylan and Irving, is what scares her the most.
As Mark’s bond with Helly deepened throughout the season, his pursuit of Ms. Casey continued to be a significant plot point. The fact that he was now integrating different aspects of his life (outer and inner) raised the possibility of complications in his relationship with Helly.
The program subtly suggested that Lumon had the ability to control the severance device, which Helena skillfully exploited up until the surprising turn of events in Episode 4.
