She‘s back!” Indeed, after a prolonged hiatus, so is “Severance” again gracing our screens on Apple TV+. The long-awaited second season kicked off on Apple TV+ with an enthralling episode that welcomed our beloved quartet of microdata refiners back to their jobs at Lumon. Why were they permitted a return after they miraculously regained consciousness in the real world? What was their motivation for going back? And what fresh mysteries did the show present with “Hello, Ms Cobel?” These are the most significant disclosures and queries from the premiere of “Severance” season two.
REVELATIONS
The Innies Are Famous (Maybe) and Lumon Claims It’s Making Changes
In the season one finale, Mark, Helly, and Irv’s Innies ventured outside for the first time, but their freedom was short-lived as Milchick tackled Dylan back at Lumon, preventing an immediate return. However, even with Dylan’s abrupt halt, they managed to expose enough information about the situation. The media widely reported on their ingenious scheme, and the quartet became the symbols of Severance transformation. According to Milchick, they are now well-known figures. Yet, he claims, that newspaper image appears quite fabricated.
Despite their infamy, it wasn’t until five months later that any of them learned something new. It was then that Mark, who had been pleading on behalf of his Outie, came back to Lumon, still shouting about the alleged survival of his wife. For Mark’s Innie, it felt as if no time had elapsed since he last saw his wedding photo at his sister’s house. Similarly, when the others eventually returned to work, it seemed as though no time had passed for them. Lumon never communicated with any of the Innies about their actions through its remote termination technology.
Upon their return to the office, Lumon announced it had transformed into a more lenient environment, offering forgiveness for past actions through an intimidating portrait of Kier. New floor manager Seth Milchick informed staff that surveillance by cameras and recording devices would cease, and they could leave whenever they wished without needing Outie approval. Additionally, Milchick intends to establish a clandestine Outie Family Room Visitation Suite for Dylan to reunite with his family – a tactic subtly designed to segregate the refiners. Moreover, every new severed employee will be shown an engaging Claymation video about the Innie Uprising, which paved the way for these beneficial changes.
Changes that undeniably appear trustworthy but are likely deceitful, serving a hidden malicious agenda.
Cobel Did Not Save Her (Old) Job at Lumon
Although it was Harmony Cobel who had been dismissed by the Board, she proved instrumental in helping Lumon when she discovered that terminated employees had accessed and disrupted the system, causing them to awaken in reality. Her intervention likely shortened the duration of the Innie rebellion. However, despite her loyalty and prompt response, Harmony was unable to regain her position as severed floor manager. Instead, Seth Milchick now holds that role, accusing Harmony for the harsh conditions previously endured by the Innies.
Lumon handled its most significant public controversy by pinning the blame on Cobel, but this could also explain why she now works for the company in a less visible role. It’s risky to lay all the blame on someone who knows so much about the company’s shady dealings. Since she doesn’t officially represent Lumon, Cobel might continue to assist them. Her past actions suggest that her allegiance is to Kier Eagan rather than Lumon.
There Are Severed Floors All Over the World
For a short while, Mark found himself with three freshly-let-go colleagues from various Lumon offices spread across the globe. This incident served as a stark reminder of Lumon’s extensive global presence, a point driven home in the recently released Claymation video. It seems that severed employees are not an isolated issue at the show’s primary location; they can be found everywhere within Lumon Corporation, demonstrating its truly international reach. The issue of layoffs appears to be a global predicament for this corporation.
Helly R. Doesn’t Want Her Co-Workers to Know Her Real Identity
Mark shared with his colleagues that Ms. Casey is his deceased wife Gemma, who was his Outie’s spouse. A sorrowful Irv informed them about his unsuccessful attempts to contact Burt. (He was continuing to knock on Burt’s front door when the elevator doors opened.) However, it was revealed that Helly R. had fabricated his identity; he is not actually Helena Eagan, the heir and daughter of Lumon CEO James Eagan.
1) Helena Eagan’s harsh words have made Helly R. self-conscious about her Innie status and fearful of her friends’ opinions. She doesn’t want them to view her any less favorably or worse. Given the circumstances, it’s understandable why she feels this way. After all, Helena Egan called her own Innie “not a person.” With trust issues already present in herself, how can she expect others to trust her? How long can she keep her secret? For how long will she want to hide it? What if they eventually discover the truth? These questions are heavy on Helly R.’s mind as she assists Mark, whom she recently kissed before their rebellion, in finding his Outie’s wife.
QUESTIONS
Why Are the Escaped Severed Employees Back at Lumon?
I can certainly see why Mark S yearned to rejoin Lumon, given that his late wife Gemma is among its employees. His initial impulse upon frantically navigating the seemingly endless corridors was to locate her. However, it’s not immediately clear why Lumon would grant him re-entry under such circumstances. Could it be a public relations move? Perhaps they aim to capitalize on Mark’s return as evidence that severance remains a practical, secure, and attractive choice. Or could they require his presence for more sinister purposes hidden within their operations? These are the questions that come to mind.
It’s still a mystery why the other Innies returned after being away for at least six months. Mark was unwilling to collaborate with the new refiners, and he even attempted to falsely incriminate another Mark. He then approached the Board expressing his desire for Helly, Irv, and Dylan to return. However, just because Mark wanted them back doesn’t automatically mean their Outies would consent to go back to Lumon. So, how did Lumon manage to persuade them? And why did Lumon allow them to come back in the first place?
The return of the escaped macrodata refiners is a serious of mysteries piled on top of one another.
Why Does a Child Now Work on the Severed Floor?
Why would Lumon bring a young child, or even an adult posing as a child, to work on their office floors? We’re really scratching our heads about Ms. Huang’s situation. It just doesn’t add up, and it feels downright strange. Could it be that Lumon is experimenting with cloning or transferring consciousness from one brain to another? Perhaps, Ms. Huang isn’t actually a child but an adult in disguise, or maybe she’s a clone of someone we thought was an adult all along. This theory might sound far-fetched, but we can’t rule it out completely!
In a fascinating studio that’s mastered the art of splitting one individual into two, the oddities don’t stop there – as I delve deeper into the captivating world of ‘Severance’, season two unfolds some truly bizarre mysteries. Leaving us pondering, what will be the next enigma to unravel in this intriguing tale?
What’s Going on with Ms. Casey and Mark’s File?
Has Miss Casey and her wellness center left Lumon’s disconnected level? Is it known if Gemma is still within the premises, though? Could she possibly be located on the enigmatic Testing Floor, the one that Outie Irv repeatedly repaints?
Essentially, what’s the connection between the file Mark is handling and the missing woman, Ms. Casey? Towards the end of the show, it seemed to suggest that the enigmatic tasks he’s engaged in now might be linked to his deceased wife, as her file appeared when he was processing some data.
Are the data processors examining genuine human feelings linked to actual individuals, or are these individuals currently digitized? Is Miss Casey entirely or partially digital?
Are the refiners of macrodata checking for authentic emotions from real people, or are these people now in a digital state? Is Miss Casey fully or partly digital?
Instead of looking for human feelings attached to real-life people, are they searching for genuine emotions from actual individuals, or is the information about them now digital? Is Miss Casey all digital or partially so?
Are the big data cleaners checking for real emotions from actual humans, or are these humans now in a computerized form? What’s up with Miss Casey – is she fully or partly digital?
Initially, we pondered whether the emotional macrodata files that significantly affect our staff members were being generated by actual individuals. It seems possible that this could indeed be the case. If so, the ramifications extend far beyond Ms. Casey. If they can maintain her “life” in this manner, it’s plausible they could sustain anyone, such as Kier Eagan himself.
After only one day back working together following the departure of four colleagues, consider the insights and questions that might arise if they had been reunited for an entire week or month.
