Sarah Bock, who made a significant impact as Miss Huang in Severance Season 2 and marked her breakthrough performance, finds it difficult to say goodbye to her character at this moment. She’s not quite prepared for this parting just yet.
In the gripping finale of Season 2, I found myself utterly captivated as the enigmatic Lumon deputy manager, a character brought to life by Bock, met a heart-wrenching, unforeseen end. The penultimate episode unveiled Miss Huang’s abrupt relocation to Svalbard, leaving her loved ones and familiar surroundings behind – a revelation that even left the talented Bock in shock.
In essence, Bock shared with People that he believes her character’s eventual fate is quite distressing. Initially, it was unexpected as she is relocated, which came as a surprise to him. There were several potential paths her narrative could have taken, but in his opinion, this one is particularly sad.
Bock confessed that she didn’t anticipate this outcome, considering all the possible paths Miss Huang’s plan might have followed. Yet, the sudden move hit her especially hard, making Huang appear more like a child – another casualty of Lumon’s corporate system.
As I learn that she’ll be parted from her home and loved ones, it becomes strikingly clear that she’s just another child caught in the grasp of the impersonal, corporate machine – a young soul tragically affected by the human system. (Bock’s statement)
For Bock, this shift presented a captivating opportunity to develop Miss Huang’s emotional complexity, unveiling aspects that had been hidden during the entire season. While he valued the extra dimensions given to his character, the prospect of parting ways remained a mix of joy and sadness.
Referring to the finale, Bock expressed, “I never anticipated some aspects of the final episodes, leaving me utterly astonished, with my jaw dropped.
Bock openly showed her love for the cast, particularly Tramell Tillman, and hinted that Miss Huang’s role might be ending. Looking back at her initial days on set, she remembered the intimidating task of acting alongside Severance veterans like Adam Scott, Britt Lower, and John Turturro, whom she regarded as true legends.
Initially feeling jittery, especially considering her admiration for her fellow actors, she eventually grew comfortable, even relishing instances where she could throw a sly, sarcastic glance.
Severance is now available on Apple TV+.
