After a span of two complete seasons, the series “Severance” has unveiled the intricate and vital nature of macrodata refinement tasks that the employees who underwent severing had been performing diligently. The inquiry remains about the exact significance behind those numbers displayed on their computer screens, as well as the content of the files that continue to remain a mystery. To avoid any spoilers, it is recommended to watch the season two finale of the show before we delve into answering these questions.
What We Know About Macrodata Refinement, the “Numbers,” and “Cold Harbor” on Severance
In simpler terms, “The numbers” were the secret task Mrs. Selvig had been hiding from Mark S. all along, which he’d been working on for the past two years at Lumon’s facility.
When an MDR team member works on a case labeled “Tumwater” or “Minsk,” they’re essentially building a unique environment. As we learned in season two, these environments are tangible locations with individual experiences. They also function independently, often referred to as ‘separate rooms.’ Finishing the file initiates a fresh Innie consciousness for an individual, fully materializing when they successfully complete an effectiveness test within this constructed space.
A refiner finishes personalizing a room when they arrange groups of numbers into separate digital containers. Historically, these groupings have had an impact on the emotions of refiners. It’s now clear that they serve as “a gateway to the mind” of the subject. In Mark S.’s scenario, the numbers acted as a gateway to his Outie’s wife, Gemma Scout. Clusters stir feelings in refiners because they symbolize the Four Temperaments that Kier Eagan believed constitute the human soul: Melancholy, Sanguine, Choleric, and Phlegmatic.
As a cinephile, I found myself wrapping up 24 files just before the season two finale. These files, you see, were instrumental in crafting 24 unique inner personalities for Gemma. The episode titled “Cold Harbor” was supposed to be Mark S.’s swan song, but it also marked a significant day for Lumon, an accomplishment they claimed would rank among the most remarkable achievements in human history.
The last document served as the definitive trial, determining if Lumon had the capability to establish an indestructible partition between a person and their fractured identities. In “Cold Harbor,” Gemma endured the most agonizing event of her life – a miscarriage – yet the trauma of even disassembling a crib was insignificant. The fortifications of her experimental chip remained intact, shielding both her Outie consciousness and all the pain she had suffered from affecting her “Cold Harbor” Innie. While dismantling the baby crib with detachment, she was following Kier Eagan’s “supreme ultimate goal,” as referred to by Mr. Drummond, which aimed at eradicating suffering entirely.
If Gemma had completed the tests for Lumon on the device implanted in her brain, they would have extracted it, effectively ending her life. The company, no longer needing Mark Scout, would then have buried him alongside a sacrificial goat filled with “energy” and “wisdom,” hoping that the goat’s spirit would guide Gemma to join Kier Eagan in the afterlife. Fortunately, Mark Scout prevented her from completing “Cold Harbor,” helping his wife escape. However, Dr. Mauer claimed he was eradicating all of her “personalities” in the process. (Regardless of what he says, that despicable creature can rot in hell.)
Now, we’ve got a good understanding of MDR files, the significance of their numerical data, the crucial role of MDR refiners (which can seem mysterious yet important), the events surrounding Cold Harbor, the special traits of Gemma and her unique severance chip, Lumon’s intentions for Gemma, and how all these elements relate to Kier Eagan and his aspirations.
Despite having a great deal of information at our disposal, it’s clear that there remains an abundance of mysteries regarding MDR and Gemma Scout’s part in Lumon’s unspoken scheme.
Or:
With all the details we have, it’s still a puzzle to figure out MDR and Gemma Scout’s role in Lumon’s secret agenda.
What We Still Don’t Know About Macrodata Refinement on Severance
1. Seth Milchick assembled a temporary team in the season two opener, whose brief tenure exposed that Lumon employs MDR staff globally. Additionally, Mark’s long-standing associates such as Dylan G. and Irv B. were part of this group and finished their respective files. However, it remains unclear for whom they were preparing these rooms.
2. Regarding the number of individuals Lumon is believed to have eliminated in the course of creating Gemma’s chip technology, that information has yet to be disclosed.
3. In terms of the goats Lorne has had to sacrifice, the specific amount or purpose behind these sacrifices have not been explicitly revealed in the series.
Additionally, it remains unclear if there was a particular purpose why Gemma’s husband needed to work on her files. Grasping the idea that the Four Temperaments are the fundamental components of a human mind, we may question how Lumon successfully converted emotions into numerical data. The concept of refining these emotions (which is not clearly defined) and then constructing a tangible room leading to the creation of a new Innie seems puzzling. Can you elaborate on the scientific principles supporting these processes?
Why exactly 25 Innies? Is there a particular reason this number was chosen? Does Lumon believe this is the maximum amount of consciousness one mind can contain? What were their plans for Gemma’s unique barrier severance chip? Were they going to analyze it, use it on someone else, or perhaps create 25 Gemma-like Innies in different bodies?
Despite all we’ve discovered about Cold Harbor, Gemma, and Kier Eagan’s vision for a hurt-free existence where Innies are spared their Outies’ sorrow, one crucial question remains unanswered: what motivates Jame Eagan to carry out these actions? What makes him convinced that this technology will bring about global transformation?
It’s not clear exactly what Lumon intended to accomplish using Gemma’s chip, but whatever it was, they regarded its completion as one of the most significant moments in human history. However, all the speculations we have about this so far are cause for concern.
