Disney is marking the 50th anniversary of *The Muppet Show* in 2026 with a new special. The special will feature longtime Muppet performers like Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman, and Matt Vogel, along with singer Sabrina Carpenter. Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and the rest of the Muppets will be back at the Muppet Theatre to host a variety show full of music, laughs, and classic Muppet mayhem.
Seth Rogen’s production company, Point Grey Pictures, is creating a new special alongside Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee. Albertina Rizzo, known for her work on *The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon*, is writing it, and Alex Timbers is directing. Both Rizzo and Timbers will also be executive producers on the project.
According to *The Hollywood Reporter*, this celebration of the Muppets isn’t just for fun – it could lead to a revival of the classic *Muppet Show*. *THR* reports that the current special is intended as a test run for a new season of the show, which originally aired in the 1970s.
We recently discussed *The Muppets* on our *Laser Focus* podcast, and we were hoping Disney would find a way to bring them back with a larger audience. We’d love for a new generation to experience the joy of these characters, and a revival of *The Muppet Show* – where they really shined – would be the perfect way to do it.
Whether this new show successfully captures the magic of *The Muppet Show* remains to be seen, but it feels like a promising start. Everyone recognizes the unique charm of The Muppets – except, of course, for Waldorf and Statler, who never miss a chance to complain!
