As a long-time Marvel enthusiast with decades of comic book lore under my belt, I can confidently say that the recent Thunderbolts poster controversy has been a rollercoaster ride. The six-fingered Sentry was a shock to many, but after investigating the matter, it seems like a simple optical illusion rather than an AI blunder or a digital editing mistake.
Recently, the initial teaser and advertisements for the film titled “Thunderbolts” have surfaced, revealing the lineup of actors and marking the long-awaited introduction of Marvel’s strongest superhero, the Sentry.
In the trailer, Lewis Pullman‘s character, Sentry, is shown to be invulnerable. But, it seems that the Marvel Cinematic Universe plans to introduce an engaging plot twist, suggesting that Sentry may have been created as a superhero instead of being naturally gifted with powers.
While fans were quick to react to the poster’s contentious aspect, they seemed to miss out on the subtler points in the trailer. It was a minor detail in the trailer, but the poster itself, which Marvel posted on their social media platforms, caused quite a stir due to Sentry appearing to have six fingers.
After closely examining the trailer, we zeroed in on Sentry’s appearances and found that indeed, he has five fingers in the scenes captured. This finding resonated with fans as well, leading them to speculate whether the poster might have been created by AI or if there was an error during post-production digital editing.
The MCU isn’t new to using AI, as Secret Invasion faced backlash for its AI-generated intro.
Thankfully, the poster didn’t originate from artificial intelligence. As per Lewis Pullman, who conversed with Collider, the “sixth finger” is merely an optical illusion. He clarified that this appearance was due to an uncommon hand position and shadows, rather than an additional digit.
Upon careful examination, it appears there are no errors present. Initially, I was taken aback, thinking an additional finger might be visible, but upon closer inspection, it turns out the image is cropped at a spot where it seems like an extra digit or oddity is occurring. Nevertheless, I appreciate the intriguing effect of this cropping.

After closely inspecting the poster, just like the actor suggested, you’ll notice a shift in perspective and realize that there are indeed five fingers visible in total.
I’ve made an effort to organize it using different colors, but if you focus on the number of visible fingers and ends, you’ll notice there are five, rather than six. This might be due to the unusual position of his hand and the way his fingers appear bent. It seems like the sixth fingertip may not be apparent in the picture, but it actually is present; it just appears to be part of his ring finger instead.
