As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for film and pop culture, I must say that Selma Blair’s reminiscing about her iconic role in Cruel Intentions is a delightful trip down memory lane. Her experience of sharing the screen with an illustrious cast like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Reese Witherspoon, not to mention the captivating costume designer Denise Wingate, is truly something to behold.
As a diehard admirer, I can’t help but reflect on my journey through the enchanting world of rom-coms, where Selma Blair has graced the silver screen numerous times. Among those memorable roles, none compare to her unforgettable portrayal of Cecile Caldwell in the 1999 masterpiece, Cruel Intentions. This year, as we celebrated its 25th anniversary in March, I found myself reminiscing about that timeless classic. Lately, Blair has shared a heartwarming tale about her son Arthur’s reaction upon watching this film for the first time. As the actress behind the Purple Violets, I can only imagine the pride she must feel.
In a chat with PEOPLE magazine, Selma Blair shared that her son Arthur Saint Bleick, who she co-parents with Jason Bleick, recently watched her popular movie Cruel Intentions for the first time. The actress mentioned that until now, her teenage son had always avoided watching any of her films.
Blair mentioned that when he saw her 1999 teen romantic drama movie, she told him, “I had a conversation with my son, and I said, ‘So, what did you do with your girlfriend over the weekend?’ He replied, ‘We watched Cruel Intentions.’ It’s been difficult to get him to watch one of my films since then.
She explained that despite her efforts, her son had never watched her films, but when it came to Cruel Intentions, he watched it with a girl, saying, “I was like, ‘Oh dear, it’s a s*xy movie.”’
In the conversation, the actress from The Feast of Love shared an amusing incident where her son mirrored a daring move from the film and inquired about it, leaving her momentarily taken aback. She remembered him asking, “Mom, what was that?”, referring to a scene where her character Cecile performs that gesture in the movie. She labeled his action as “naughty,” pointing out that this was the crux of the story, acknowledging that he remained fond of the film and it continued to be engaging.
A few weeks ago, Selma Blair shared with a publication that she almost always re-watches the movie “Cruel Intentions,” where Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character Kathryn Merteuil and Ryan Phillippe’s Sebastian Valmont play wicked stepsiblings who orchestrate manipulative schemes against Reese Witherspoon’s Annette Hargrove and Selma Blair’s Cecile Caldwell at their elite Manhattan preparatory school.
The actress enthusiastically shared, “I’m incredibly delighted that the movie received attention because it truly is exceptional and sensual. I must commend Denise Wingate for her outstanding work on the costumes; the film is visually stunning and remains captivating even after all these years. Frankly, I adore it, as well as every actor in the cast.
Blair stated, “I’ll always have it playing, you could say. It’s not something I actively switch on, but if it happens to be on in the background, I would never turn it off – ever.
Currently, you can watch Roger Kumble’s film “Cruel Intentions” on Amazon Prime Video. This movie is a contemporary retelling of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” which earned over $70 million at the worldwide box office upon its debut.
