During the Los Angeles premiere of the movie on October 21st, Gomez admitted to The Hollywood Reporter that she was unaware of Audiard’s intended concept for the film, aside from his instruction for her to act drunk and toss her shoes if desired. Essentially, he told her to go all out. Unphased by this request, Gomez agreed and threw herself into the role she wanted in the movie.
During her audition, Gomez enacted the most significant scene of the character: a musical piece titled “Bienvenida,” in which she expressed her feelings of confusion and struggle regarding her spouse’s transformation into the title role, Emilia Pérez, portrayed by renowned Spanish actress Karla Sofia Gascon.
During an interview with THR, the former Disney star shared that following her initial performance at the audition, Audiard instructed her to “amplify the intensity.” So, I did just that – I climbed on furniture, lost consciousness momentarily, but poured my whole heart into singing and dancing as if possessed – perhaps a tipsy, frenzied spirit. It was an exhilarating ordeal, she said. She felt privileged when he eventually chose her for the role.
Emilia Pérez, featuring Zoe Saldana and Edgar Ramirez, garnered positive feedback at the Cannes Film Festival in May. It was here that it received an extended standing ovation lasting for several minutes and earned both the Jury Prize and the Best Actress award, thanks to its female-focused cast.
