In the movie Emilia Pérez, Selena Gomez’s performance received mixed opinions. Some thought her portrayal was exceptional, while others felt her Spanish accent needed improvement and didn’t think it warranted the accolades. However, this role held significant personal value for Gomez, as she had been eagerly waiting for a chance like the one presented by the Jacques Audiard-directed film.
At a Variety-hosted panel during the Palm Springs Fest, the artist behind “Same Old Love” shared that working on the musical thriller was like living a dream job as an actor. She confessed that for quite some time, she had yearned to encounter something that would stimulate her and make her feel somewhat challenged.
Over the captivating narrative, what truly clinched the opportunity for her was the presence of an excellent director. The actress from “The Only Murders in the Building” confessed that collaborating with distinguished directors had long been a dream of hers.
She admitted that initially reading the script for Emilia Pérez left her puzzled, but it wasn’t until she talked about it with Audiard that things became clearer. As they worked on the film together, everything gradually made sense. “He is one of the top directors I have ever had the pleasure of working with,” she also said.
Gomez teamed up with her fellow actress and rising star, Karla Sofia Gascón, who explained why they both took on this project. Gascón disclosed that she saw the movie as a chance to delve into LGBTQ+ stories beyond typical cliches and stereotypes.
She shared that what made the film particularly captivating for her was the “romantic connection” between Epifanio and Emilia. “By showcasing these characters not often seen in mainstream roles, this movie is shedding light on previously underrepresented communities such as the LGBTQ+ and trans community,” the actress further explained.
In the opinion of Gascón, this movie demonstrated that such communities aren’t just confined to shadowy streets or relegated to marginalized existences. Instead, she underscored that these individuals are ubiquitous and have no need to justify how they choose to use their bodies.
The actress observed that the unexpected settings for these characters in the film make it feel more contemporary.
