Despite not being nominated for the Oscars this year, Selena Gomez continues to support her Emilia Pérez family, particularly Karla Sofia Gascón who was nominated for Best Actress, and Zoe Saldaña who received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
On Instagram Stories, the multi-talented star beamed with joy as she expressed, “Over the moon with pride for my EmiliaPerez family, celebrating their nominations!” by posting a video highlighting her colleagues’ award nominations.
Although the artist behind the hit “Baila Conmigo” didn’t receive an Oscar nomination herself, her film, “Emilia Pérez,” garnered several recognitions, including nominations for Best Picture, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and two nods for Best Original Song.
In this movie directed by Jacques Audiard, we follow the story of a driven lawyer, played by Saldaña, who takes on a client – a Mexican drug cartel leader, played by Gascón – who is preparing for a transformation through gender reassignment surgery as part of a new identity.
Gomez takes on the role of Jessi Del Monte, a woman who is separated from the head of a Mexican cartel. The actress from Wizards of Waverly Place has been honored in the awards circuit this season, having been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at both the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes.
Currently, Emilia Pérez has made history as the first openly trans woman to receive an Oscar nomination, setting another cultural milestone. Simultaneously, Saldaña expressed her joy and appreciation on Instagram about her first-ever nomination. In her post, she stated, “I am deeply honored and extremely grateful for this nomination. Thank you so much for even considering me for this award. I am overjoyed to be part of such a talented group.
In the Best Supporting Actress category, the actress from Avatar will be up against Ariana Grande, Monica Barbaro, Isabella Rossellini, and Felicity Jones. For Gascón, her fellow nominees consist of Cynthia Erivo (from Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).
In 2025, the Academy Awards will be held on March 2, with Conan O’Brien as the host. The event will air live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, simultaneously on ABC and Hulu. Audience members can catch Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Zoe Saldaña in Emilia Pérez, which is currently available to stream on Netflix.
