Selena Gomez recently charmed fans with her honest and funny reaction to a slightly awkward question about how she looks. She turned the moment into something relatable and used it as a chance to share a positive message on social media.
After posting on Instagram on December 16th, singer Selena Gomez responded to a fan who asked how she shaves her mustache. Instead of being upset, Gomez laughed and explained it wasn’t a mustache at all – it’s a skin condition called melasma.
The 33-year-old shared that she has melasma, a skin condition caused by sun exposure, and a pimple. She showed a close-up of her upper lip, explaining that melasma is caused by the sun, so using sunscreen and being careful are important. The Cleveland Clinic explains that melasma causes dark patches on the skin, often on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip, and is commonly triggered by sunlight and hormonal changes.
Selena Gomez keeps it real about her skin
Selena Gomez has often talked about how she feels about her appearance. She’s become more and more confident being herself over time. In a 2024 interview with Vogue, she explained that she’s reached a point where she’s truly comfortable with who she is, saying, “I’ve grown so much, and now I’m really comfortable in my own skin.” She also shared that being true to herself means not being afraid to be herself.
Selena Gomez’s newfound self-assurance has also affected how she views makeup. In a 2020 CNN essay, she explained that she once felt she needed makeup to feel attractive, but now realizes true beauty comes from within. She sees makeup as simply a fun addition, and created her brand, Rare Beauty, in 2019 to push back against unrealistic beauty standards and celebrate individuality.
Selena Gomez recently responded to comments about a change in her voice during an Instagram Live session. She explained that she sometimes experiences swelling in her throat, which affects how she sounds. She thanked her fans for being honest with her, saying she appreciated their directness.
Selena Gomez is speaking out after a very positive year. She married music producer Benny Blanco in September, and their collaborative album, ‘I Said I Love You First,’ climbed to the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Plus, she received her fourth Golden Globe nomination in a row for her work on ‘Only Murders in the Building’.
