Sebastian Stan Reveals He Almost Played Captain Kirk in ‘Star Trek’

As a gamer who has seen countless movies and TV shows, I can confidently say that Sebastian Stan‘s journey in Hollywood is nothing short of captivating. From his humble beginnings to his meteoric rise as Bucky Barnes in the MCU, it’s been an exhilarating ride. However, what truly fascinates me is the fact that he almost played Captain Kirk!

Absolutely, Sebastian Stan has transformed into a fitting brand name and is actively marketing two upcoming movies: “The Apprentice,” where he portrays Donald Trump, and “Thunderbolts,” where he reprises his character Bucky Barnes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). For Stan, the role of Bucky Barnes was the catalyst for his acting career.

After playing Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor transformed into a bona fide star. Initially, his role had modest boundaries, but with “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” he took on significant importance and gained immense affection from viewers.

Recently, Sebastian Stan appeared on Justin Horowitz’s podcast, “Happy Sad Confused,” where they had an engaging and extensive conversation. During this chat, Stan shared details about his upcoming work and also touched upon some past elements of his acting journey. Remarkably, we learned a fascinating detail about him!

In their conversation, Horowitz and Stan delved into various facets of Stan’s life and career. We’ve previously shared how Stan expressed his desire to portray The Riddler and how Downey’s surprise reveal at Comic-Con took even him, as a Marvel Cinematic Universe cast member, by surprise. However, you might not be aware that Stan nearly landed the role of Captain Kirk, and he even participated in a photoshoot for this part! Although there were other roles under consideration, let’s take a look at the interview excerpt that verifies this:

If you can’t manage to open the video yet, but still eager to discover what took place, I have a written version prepared just for you:

JH: Were there any instances earlier in your career where you believed ‘This could be the game-changer,’ such as auditioning for Captain Kirk or Prince Caspian, for example? In other words, were there roles that made you think, ‘This is it, this could change everything’?

Yesterday, I went out, and there were a couple of items I couldn’t acquire. Specifically, there was a movie starring Russell Crowe that I really wanted, but I couldn’t find it. I can’t recall the title. Additionally, I intended to buy “The Mysteries of Pittsburgh,” but I didn’t. At that time, I seem to have lost quite a few things to Jon Foster. He was my brother, by the way… I almost got my hands on Captain Kirk for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek, one of the first items I came close to obtaining.

JH: Is that… I… I just threw that out of…

SS: Oh? I thought you knew that…

JH: I didn’t know that, but like, I could see it. I could see you being up for that.

SS: I recall being extremely close to landing a role and I remember having a screen test with him at Paramount Studios. My manager arranged a separate photoshoot for me, asking me to mimic William Shatner’s photos to show my resemblance. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the part. Then, I mentioned that Green Lantern was another role I auditioned for. I remember being in the same room as Justin Timberlake, Jared Leto, Ryan Reynolds, and perhaps one other person. As I looked at these talented individuals, I felt overwhelmed, thinking there was no chance for me to secure the role. However, looking back, I’m almost grateful it didn’t happen because I’m unsure if I could have managed the attention those stars received.
