Sebastian Stan Remembers the STAR TREK and GREEN LANTERN Roles He Really Wanted

As a fellow gamer and film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a tinge of sympathy for Sebastian Stan. The guy had his sights set on some iconic roles, only to be thwarted by fate (and perhaps a smidgen of better-known competitors).

Sebastian Stan, known to us comic book enthusiasts as Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, harbored dreams of exploring other fictional worlds. In a conversation with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sebastian Stan divulged that he had auditioned for the role of Captain Kirk in the latest Star Trek movies and Hal Jordan in the 2011 Green Lantern film. Those roles ultimately went to Chris Pine and Ryan Reynolds. (A big thanks to Deadline for sharing this fascinating tidbit with us!)

He mentioned that there were a few things he didn’t understand well, which he truly wished to grasp, but one of the most coveted was the opportunity to play Captain Kirk for J.J. Abrams. He recalled being incredibly close to landing this role and even had a screen test with Abrams at Paramount. His manager also arranged a separate photo shoot for him to mimic William Shatner’s iconic images, hoping to showcase his resemblance, but he ultimately didn’t secure the part.

Stan shared that he auditioned for the role of Green Lantern as well, stating, “I recall walking in, and it was like myself, Justin Timberlake, Jared Leto, Ryan Reynolds, and perhaps another individual. As I looked at these talented individuals, I thought to myself, ‘This can’t be happening! There’s no way this is going to work!’

Instead of pondering over Sebastian Stan playing Hal Jordan or Kirk, it’s worth noting that he landed an excellent and financially rewarding role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, don’t you agree?
