SDCC 2024: Thunderbolts* Cast Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh And David Harbour Talks Movie; Reveals Lewis Pullman’s Mystery Role

As a die-hard Marvel fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as I absorb every detail about the upcoming Thunderbolts movie! The recent panel at the comic book studio was a goldmine of information, and I feel fortunate to be part of this fandom community where we get to witness these moments firsthand.

At a comic book company event, actors Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Hannah John-Kamen, together with director Jake Schreier, unveiled information about their upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) collaboration, Thunderbolts. In this Phase 5 production, helmed by Schreier, an intriguing team of antiheroes and villains join forces for a secret mission that could significantly alter the MCU.

Thunderbolts* cast reveals new details about the movie

In “Thunderbolts,” the star-studded lineup consists of Pugh portraying Yelena Belova, Stan embodying Bucky Barnes, Harbour taking on the role of Red Guardian, Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, John-Kamen playing Ghost, and Russell assuming the part of John Walker. There were earlier rumors suggesting Harrison Ford’s reprisal of U.S. President Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross from “Captain America: Brave New World,” but the panel clarified that he does not appear in “Thunderbolts” in person.

At the event, with Harbour donning his Red Guardian attire, he took umbrage at the paucity of costumes worn by others, yet sincerely commended Pugh and fellow co-stars such as Russell. He emphasized that in Thunderbolts, Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena, truly shines as the standout. “Everyone is fantastic,” Harbour shared during the interview, “but I must confess, my favorite is named Florence Pugh.”

“He added, ‘She’s an exhilarating collaborator. Their connection is intricate and multifaceted in this iteration. He’s self-centered to the point of being detrimental to others, while she is single-mindedly lethal. It’s not a promising foundation for a relationship.’ “

Pugh shared that she enjoyed the thrilling stunts in the film. “It’s fun for us to pull off stunts,” she expressed, “but I can’t take credit for all of them. I enjoy performing my own stunts, yet I’m equally impressed by the expertise of the stunt team in making them look even more impressive.”

Marvel Studios debuts Thunderbolts* footage at SDCC

At Hall H, attendees were treated to a sneak peek of the film’s thrilling scenes, which included intriguing footage of the enigmatic character, Bob, portrayed by Lewis Pullman. This figure is strongly suspected to be the mighty Marvel superhero, the Sentry, whose true identity is Robert Reynolds. In this clip, he is shown wearing a hospital gown yet remains unfazed by gunfire, fueling whispers of his invincibility.

According to early Thunderbolts previews unveiled at Comic-Con, the narrative is expected to delve into the emotional depths of these characters following their past hardships. It’s possible that Valentina may exploit their weaknesses while forming her squad, although this remains to be confirmed.

At San Diego Comic-Con, a sneak peek of the MCU’s Thunderbolts team was revealed, drawing parallels with both the Avengers and Suicide Squad from DC. The intrigue lies in the morally ambiguous roles of these characters, as shown in the footage, making their storyline an engaging prospect for the upcoming Thunderbolts film.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel head Kevin Feige once remarked, “They hardly see themselves as heroes. Not a single one would claim that title. With Bucky Barnes taking the lead role, that speaks volumes about the group as a whole.”

The release date for Thunderbolts had to be postponed earlier because of the industry-wide writers’ and actors’ strikes in Hollywood during the previous year. Now, the film is set to premiere in theaters on July 25, 2025.
