As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but gush over the unforgettable duo, Jay and Silent Bob, who first graced our screens in the iconic Clerks films. These characters have since become beloved for their witty pop culture commentary, with an unmistakable humor that only a stoner pair can deliver. From the hilarious Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back to the recent reboot, these movies never fail to amuse me. Known for their unique bond, Jay often refers to Bob as his “hetero life-mate.” Their friendship is one of a kind!

In the early ’90s, Smith emerged as a significant player in geek culture through the release of the first Clerks film, which came at the height of the American indie cinema movement. Over the years, he’s amassed a dedicated following by crafting movies that strike a chord with viewers.

Smith experimented with studio filmmaking through ventures such as Zack and Miri Make a Porno and Cop Out. However, it was his independent projects that brought him greater achievements.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, filmmaker Kevin Smith reminisced about his final chat with the sadly departed Shannen Doherty. Doherty, renowned for her role in Charmed, lost her fight against cancer in July.

Smith looked back on their inaugural Comic-Con experience in 1995, sharing with People magazine how Doherty’s popularity made a significant impact. “It was an oddity when our movie Mallrats was released and underperformed,” he said. “But during our first Comic-Con attendance 29 years ago, the response was incredible. Mostly due to her – she already had recognition among the audience.”

Smith discussed the possibility of Doherty participating in Vulgarathon, a New Jersey event commencing on August 3rd, which showcases screenings of Smith’s films, including Mallrats. The Clerks actor stated, “Our recent discussions were about her joining us in Jersey for Vulgarathon as she has been to various conventions and even met the Mallrats group.”

He stated, “‘Wow, Shannen, if you join us to watch the film at our cinema, it will undoubtedly elevate your status,’ he said.”

After Doherty’s death, one of Smith’s collaborators proposed resurrecting the sequel plan as a heartfelt homage to her. According to Smith, this would be an appropriate method to pay tribute to Doherty’s legacy.
