SD Gundam G Generation ETERNAL Support Defense Guide

This technique or strategy has been part of the game for some time now, yet I suspect not everyone may be fully conscious of it, including myself until recently.

How Does Support Defense Work

Let’s kick off by examining how the Support Defense mechanism typically functions. A Machine with Support Defense can shield an ally that falls within its Move Range from its current position. This action requires a Support Defense token, but if the Machine performing the Support Defense manages to dodge the enemy attack successfully, the token won’t be depleted.

This mechanic works the same for both the player and the AI.

Blocking Support Defenses

As a gamer, when I trigger the “Support Defense” ability, my on-screen character – the Support Defender – performs a dynamic movement towards the ally or location I’ve chosen to protect. It’s like calling for backup, and seeing it unfold in real time!

In light of this, the Defender should have the ability to traverse any barriers and cover the distance to the Defense Target within its movement range (MOV).

In simpler terms, when your units are occupying certain tiles, enemies cannot move through or past those spaces. This allows you to prevent support defenders from providing support if you strategically position your units to block their path, making the shortest possible route longer than the defender’s movement range.

Example

To demonstrate its functionality, I will utilize GQuuuuuuX, Defense Pilot Shin Matsunaga, the Gundam (EX), and Defense Pilot Amuro for this example.

In simpler terms, unit GQuuuuuuX is capable of defending allies within a radius of five spaces due to its MOV value being 5. On the other hand, unit Gundam (EX) has a MOV value of 4, which limits its defense support to allies within a four-space radius.

Intercepting Support Defense

In this setup, Gundam EX is situated three spaces away from Dozle Zabi’s Zaku II. Unfortunately, Gundam EX cannot perform a Support Defense due to an opposing Gundam standing in the way, effectively blocking the three-space path between them. The shortest alternative route for Gundam EX is five spaces long, which exceeds its movement limit of four spaces.

In the situation where an enemy Gundam blocks our direct path by 3 tiles, our GQuuuuuuX can still execute a Support Defense maneuver. This is possible because unlike the Gundam EX, GQuuuuuuX has a greater movement range of 5 tiles. As a result, we can circumnavigate the enemy Gundam and reach Dozle Zabi’s Zaku II along an alternate 5-tile path, effectively carrying out the Support Defense mission.

Instead of keeping GQuuuuuuX and Dozle Zabi’s Zaku II just 4 tiles apart, stretching the distance gives the enemy Gundam an advantage. It can block our Support Defense by strategically standing in the column that directly separates our two MS units. This is because if GQuuuuuuX were to move any further, it would have to travel 6 tiles, which is beyond its capability.
