SCREAM 7 Filmed an Alternate Ending That Test Audiences HATED

Before Scream 7 came out, fans were wondering if Stu Macher, Roman Bridger, and Dewey Riley would somehow return. The problem? All three characters had died in earlier films—at least, two of them were definitely gone. For years, rumors circulated about whether Stu Macher had actually survived the first Scream movie and might reappear after 30 years seeking revenge. The trailers for Scream 7, and even comments from Matthew Lillard, hinted that Stu might still be alive.

The ending of the latest Scream movie reveals that Stu wasn’t actually one of the killers, but a sophisticated AI. Interestingly, director Kevin Williamson considered a different ending where Stu survived. A test version of the film with this alternate ending was even shown to audiences.

I was reading an interview with director Stu Williamson in Esquire, and he was talking about how they handled Stu’s character in the plot. He basically said they wanted to have it both ways – to keep things ambiguous. He actually gave all the credit for that idea to Guy Busick, the writer, who came up with all the AI elements. Williamson confessed that when he first read the script, he was worried about how they’d pull it off – how they’d make it believable that Stu was still ‘alive’ in some form. They even considered how some viewers might be let down if it turned out he wasn’t actually a real person anymore. He admitted they filmed scenes to support both possibilities, just to see what worked best.

Apparently, there’s a scene filmed after the main ending of Scream 7 showing Stu Macher still alive and causing trouble. However, test audiences didn’t like it. According to writer Kevin Williamson, they had the scene ready just in case, but viewers preferred that Stu remain dead.

I’ve always believed Stu’s survival wouldn’t make sense – multiple stab wounds to the chest and his head essentially burned off by an old TV? It just doesn’t fit with the realistic world the Scream movies have created. It’s much more plausible that someone is using AI to mimic Stu and torment Sidney than for him to have secretly been alive all these years without anyone finding out. I’m relieved the test audiences agreed!
