Scooter Braun Breaks Silence as Taylor Swift Buys Back Song Masters: Know Full Timeline of Their Feud

Scooter Braun, in response to Taylor Swift’s recent declaration about owning the masters of all her songs, expressed positivity, saying “I’m glad for her.” This statement came after Swift announced the news in an emotional message she penned for her fans on her website on May 30.

During a conversation with TODAY, Braun expressed his thoughts soon after Swift stated, “Every piece of music I’ve ever created…is now back in my possession.

She stated, “This moment is not just my greatest dream realized; it’s a significant understatement. To my fans, you understand the immense significance this has held for me, which is why I took the time to carefully re-record and release four of my albums, labeling them as ‘Taylor’s Versions’.

How did Taylor Swift get control of her masters? Here’s a timeline

The disagreement started in 2019 when Scooter Braun acquired Big Machine Records, Taylor Swift’s previous label. This acquisition granted him control over the original recordings of her first six albums, leading to a controversy the following year when Braun sold these masters to Shamrock Capital, a private investment company.

In 2020, Taylor Swift revealed that she had tried to negotiate with Braun, only to be asked to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), which she believed would prevent her from speaking out. Later in 2021, Braun told Variety that he had proposed selling the masters back, but her team chose not to accept this offer.

At the tender age of 15, Swift joined Big Machine Records, and in November 2020, she embarked on a project to re-record her studio albums. As of now, she has put out four re-made albums.

  • Fearless (Taylor’s Version) – 2021
  • Red (Taylor’s Version) – 2021
  • Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) – 2023
  • 1989 (Taylor’s Version) – 2023

Prior to her May 30 statement, Taylor Swift had two more albums yet to be released: her self-titled debut from 2006 and Reputation in 2017. In her letter, she shared that she has finished re-recording her first album but is only a fourth of the way through re-recording Reputation.

In her own words, she stated, “I genuinely felt there was no way to enhance the one album among the initial six, if given a chance to rework it,” with the mention of previously unheard tracks from the original recording sessions being included.

Swift expressed gratitude towards her fans for assisting her in purchasing back her music. She stated, ‘I can’t express enough my appreciation for helping me regain possession of this work I’ve devoted my life to, but never truly owned until now.’ Furthermore, she suggested that additional re-releases under the Taylor’s Versions might still occur as a way to celebrate.

On Instagram, Swift celebrated the occasion by sharing four images alongside vinyl versions of her initial six albums, accompanied by the caption, “You’re meant to be mine.
