Scarlett Johansson Sets Her Sights on Playing a Legendary Disney Villain

I’m so excited to hear that Disney is finally making a live-action version of *Tangled*! There were rumors it was stalled, but it sounds like it’s back on track now, which is fantastic news for all of us fans.

Scarlett Johansson is reportedly being considered for the role of Mother Gothel, the famous villain from the story.

After Disney’s live-action *Snow White* didn’t perform well in theaters, the studio put a hold on the film and began re-evaluating its plans for other live-action remakes.

Following the huge success of *Lilo & Stitch*, which grossed over $1 billion globally, Disney revisited and revitalized the production of *Tangled*.

This movie is a new take on the classic Rapunzel story, the fairy tale about a princess known for her incredibly long, magical hair.

The upcoming live-action movie will be based on Disney’s popular 2010 animated film, *Tangled*. Michael Gracey, the director of *The Greatest Showman*, is currently being considered to direct. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who wrote the recent *I Know What You Did Last Summer* reboot for Sony, is writing the screenplay. The rest of the cast hasn’t been announced yet.

For years, Disney has been considering a live-action version of *Tangled*. Hannah Shaw-Williams of Screen Rant reported back in 2020 that while a direct sequel to the animated film wasn’t in the works, a live-action retelling of the Rapunzel story was already in development.

In December 2024, it was officially confirmed that Gracey and Robinson were working on the project.

Production on the live-action *Snow White* film was temporarily halted in April 2025 because the initial results weren’t promising. However, the success of Disney’s more recent films has given the project a new boost and it’s back on track.

If Scarlett Johansson plays Mother Gothel, it would be another big project with Disney, following her work in *Black Widow*.

This villain is one of Disney’s most famous, remembered for her desperate desire to stay young and her complete control over Rapunzel.

Disney hasn’t announced when the movie will come out, but people are already excited about the possibility of Johansson playing this famous character.
