Reports indicate that Scarlett Johansson requested Marvel Studios to exclude her name from the credits of the Thunderbolts film, also known as the New Avengers.
At first, Scarlett Johansson was recognized as an executive producer for the movie ‘Thunderbolts’. Additionally, she is noted as an executive producer in the film ‘Black Widow’ as well.
It’s plausible that since Black Widow characters are featured in Thunderbolts and Florence Pugh plays a newer iteration of the role, it could be a contractual agreement that granted Scarlett Johansson an executive producer title for Thunderbolts.
Scarlett Johansson Explains Why She Pulled Her Name from Thunderbolts
In my conversation with David Harbour, I shared that I wasn’t involved with the Thunderbolts project and didn’t wish for my involvement to be acknowledged.
Here’s the exchange:
Harbor shared with Johansson that her Black Widow character was extensively featured throughout the film, prompting him to inquire if she had already viewed it.
“No,” Johansson replied.
Harbour said, “Okay. You are an executive producer on it. Congratulations.”
Johansson interjected and clarified, “I asked to have my credit removed because I wasn’t involved.”
Harbour shot back and joked, “You hated the movie that much?”
Johansson replied, “No, you’re just wanting that to be the case.”
Harbour then said she would “be proud of us,” with Johansson adding, “I am proud of you.”
Thunderbolts Bombs at the Box Office — Johansson Wanted Out
In Hollywood, it’s common practice for people to be listed as executive producers without being directly involved in the movie production – this is often due to contractual agreements. Interestingly, it seems that Scarlett Johansson has asked to have her credit removed, suggesting she may not have received any payment for it.
It appears that box office performance might be a significant factor, as “Thunderbolts” is currently one of the least successful Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films to date, trailing only behind “The Marvels.” The “New Avengers” are struggling to surpass the $400 million mark, sitting at $377M so far. It’s likely that Disney will incur losses of over $100 million due to this film’s underperformance.
