Sarah Paulson and Ryan Murphy are teaming up again for a new Netflix series called “Monster.” Sources say Paulson is likely to star in the show’s fourth season, portraying the notorious serial killer Aileen Wuornos.
The upcoming season will center around Lizzie Borden and the infamous case of her alleged axe murders of her father and stepmother.
Filming is underway in Los Angeles. While Aileen Wuornos won’t be the central figure, the new season appears to explore how Borden’s case relates to other female killers, and how those women have impacted how the public thinks about crime and celebrity. The show previously did something similar in Season 3, demonstrating the cultural influence of Ed Gein’s crimes.
The cast for the upcoming series includes Ella Beatty as Lizzie Borden, with Charlie Hunnam taking on the role of her father, Andrew Jackson Borden, after previously appearing in Season 3. Rebecca Hall will play Abby Borden, Lizzie’s stepmother, and Billie Lourd will portray Lizzie’s sister, Emma. Jessica Barden is cast as Lizzie’s friend, actress Nance O’Neill, and Vicky Krieps will play Bridget Sullivan, the family’s maid.
Aileen Wuornos was found guilty of murdering seven men in Florida and was put to death in 2002. Her story has been dramatized in numerous films and documentaries, most notably in the 2003 movie “Monster,” for which Charlize Theron won an Academy Award. Several other actresses, including Peyton List, Jean Smart, and Lily Rabe, have also portrayed Wuornos, with Lily Rabe playing the role in the fifth season of Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Story.”
Sarah Paulson and Evan Murphy frequently collaborate. Paulson is well-known for her nearly continuous role in “American Horror Story,” and has been nominated for an Emmy Award five times for her work on the show. Recently, it was announced she’ll be back for the show’s thirteenth season.
