Sarah Paulson Reveals ‘Mother-Daughter Connection is at the Core’ of Her Upcoming Thriller Movie

As a devoted fan of Sarah Paulson, I find myself captivated by her latest role in the upcoming Hulu flick, Hold Your Breath. Her portrayal of Margaret, a mother driven to extremes to protect her children, resonates deeply with me, not just as a fan, but as someone who appreciates the raw emotion that Sarah brings to her characters.

Emmy-winning actress Sarah Paulson has given a behind-the-scenes look into the creation of her upcoming Hulu movie titled Hold Your Breath. In an interview with PEOPLE, Paulson explains that the film centers around deception and showcases a profound mother-daughter bond amidst nerve-wracking circumstances they encounter. “At its heart,” she says, “it’s a moving tale about a mother who is determined to protect her children.”

Sarah Paulson on the essential mother-daughter bond in Hold Your Breath

As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: “At the heart of this tale lies the profound bond between mothers and daughters,” Paulson explains about the movie, which unfolds in the dusty plains of Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl era, emphasizing that it’s not your typical horror flick. In an exclusive sneak peek for PEOPLE, I step into the shoes of Margaret, a loving mother who will stop at nothing to shield her daughters from harm.

Paulson immersed herself in the period of U.S. history marked by recurrent dust storms, acknowledging that she had viewed Ken Burns’ Dust Bowl documentary and perused Dorothea Lange’s photos from the Great Depression for a more comprehensive grasp.

Upon reading the script, the actor found herself immediately attracted to Margaret’s nurturing disposition. Although Paulson doesn’t have biological kids, she expresses that she exhibits this trait due to her rich relationships, including being an aunt to her sister’s children and having three beloved dogs she’s deeply fond of.

Hold Your Breath out October 3

Paulson’s character strives hard to maintain order, but as events unfold, she gradually loses control, leading to a disturbing outburst of chaos. The stunning backdrop for this tale is Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Amiah Miller, and Annaleigh Ashford will share the screen with Paulson, adding to the show’s growing popularity.

To replicate the dust storms, the team would generously scatter loose dirt around on set. Paulson frequently asked for even more dust, a request that often sparked disagreements between her and the safety coordinator. She admits, “I’m an actor who, perhaps revealing my lack of skill, prefers it as authentic as possible,” explaining her decision and rationale.

Hold Your Breath is set to be released by Searchlight Pictures on Hulu this October.
