Buffy fans won’t be seeing a new TV series after all. Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on Instagram on March 14th that the planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been cancelled.
I just heard from the actress herself that the project has been canceled by Hulu. She wanted to let us fans know personally, so she shared the news in a video message. It’s definitely disappointing, but I appreciate her telling us directly.
In a video, Gellar shared the disappointing news that Hulu has cancelled the planned ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale’ revival. She said she wanted her fans to hear the news directly from her.
A revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer had been in the works for some time, aiming to revisit the world of the original series over 20 years later. Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed the planned title was Buffy: New Sunnydale, and it would have centered around a different slayer. Gellar was going to be involved both on screen, in a repeating role, and behind the scenes as an executive producer.

In the video, the actress also expressed gratitude to director Chloé Zhao, who was originally involved with the series. Zhao was set to both direct and executive produce, and Gellar shared that working with her reinforced how much Buffy means to her and the show’s fans.
Honestly, I was so surprised to be revisiting Buffy Summers again – it felt like slipping back into her iconic boots! Chloé really reminded me just how much I adore that character, and how important she is to so many people, myself included. And, you know, none of that has changed at all.
She closed her message with a familiar quote for her dedicated followers: “And I promise, even if the world ends, you can still reach me.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a hugely popular show about the supernatural, was on TV from 1997 to 2003. Its success then led to a spin-off series called Angel, which ran from 1999 to 2004.
As a huge fan of the show, I always loved the ensemble cast alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar. There were so many recognizable faces – Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Head, David Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon, James Marsters, Eliza Dushku, and even Seth Green! It was really sad to hear about Michelle Trachtenberg’s passing in 2025; she was far too young at just 39.
The new version of the show brought together a talented team. Nora and Lila Zuckerman were tapped to write and executive produce, and country music icon Dolly Parton joined as an executive producer through her production company, Sandollar Entertainment. Interestingly, Parton also secretly helped produce the original series.
In March 2025, Gellar expressed enthusiasm for revisiting the story with a fresh approach. She also mentioned that working with Zhao was a surprising and welcome opportunity.
Sarah Michelle Gellar was completely surprised when Chloé Zhao reached out to her for a collaboration and advice, especially since Zhao had never worked on a TV show before, Gellar shared with People magazine.
Although the planned reboot isn’t happening, fans can still enjoy the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer. All seven seasons are now streaming on Hulu.
