Sarah Michelle Gellar Says She’d Be Ready To Take Over Late Friend Shannen Doherty’s Role If There’s A Sequel To THIS Hit 1995 Movie

As a devoted fan who has grown up with these incredible actresses, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions at the prospect of a Mallrats sequel dedicated to Shannen Doherty. The friendship between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Shannen was one for the ages, and it’s heartwarming to see that bond continue even after Shannen’s passing.

It appears that Kevin Smith is considering making a sequel to his 1995 film Mallrats as a tribute to the late Shannen Doherty, and it’s worth noting that Sarah Michelle Gellar, who Smith wants to replace Doherty’s character, seems to have shown interest.

As a devoted admirer, I’m sad to share that Doherty departed from us on July 13, after a long and courageous fight against breast cancer.

Smith mentioned in an interview with THR, published October 2, that he would suggest Sarah to replace Shannen if the opportunity arises for “Twilight of the Mallrats.” He believes this could hold personal significance for her due to their long-standing friendship with Shannen. Sarah, in his view, would embody Shannen’s warmth and it might be the closest thing to having Shannen on set herself.

Not long after the interview was shared, the actress who played Buffy the Vampire Slayer took to social media to show her excitement about it, posting, “I’m all for this arrangement.

The movie Mallrats revolves around two close friends, both guys, as they navigate a day at the local mall, filled with various shenanigans, to help themselves move on from their recent breakups. Joining Doherty in this comedic tale are Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Jeremy London, Claire Forlani, and Joey Lauren Adams.

During his recent interview, the film’s writer and director, Smith, hinted that we might get to see the upcoming sequel earlier than initially expected.

He suggested there might be a possible way to win, though he didn’t guarantee it would happen. Over the past month, he’s had strange flashes of optimistic talks and feelings. If this film ever gets produced, Smith indicated that it will be dedicated to someone special.

Gellar and Doherty had been friends for over three decades, as Gellar emphasized through her social media posts following the actress’s demise. “It’s hard to find the right words to encapsulate 30 years of friendship,” Gellar stated in part. “I keep reminding myself that it hurts this much because there was so much love.” (paraphrased)

Apart from the previously mentioned movie, Doherty gained widespread recognition through roles in shows like Beverly Hills, 90210, Charmed, Heathers, and additional projects.
