As a long-time Buffy fan and Sarah Michelle Gellar admirer, I am absolutely thrilled to see her stepping into yet another powerful role that challenges societal norms. Playing Tanya Martin in Dexter: Original Sin is not just a return to formidable female characters for SMG; it’s a leap forward in portraying women who defy expectations and break barriers.
Sarah Michelle Gellar ventured beyond her accustomed roles to portray the tough-as-nails scientist, Tanya Martin, in Dexter: Original Sin. Previously, she’s embodied powerful female characters like Buffy Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Gellar found the character of Tanya especially rewarding.
On Saturday, 3rd August, during Comic-Con, the actress spoke to Variety about her forthcoming movie and role. “I’m the scientist,” she expressed, “You should trust me as a scientist, correct? I perform scientific tasks.”
Geller shared insights on why this role held significant weight for her. In the 90s setting, she was a pioneering forensics expert at the Miami Metro Police Department – a profession that wasn’t common for women during that era. “I’m accustomed to portraying strong female characters, and this one is no different,” she remarked, “but what sets her apart is that in those days, women rarely held positions like these.” She added, “They hardly led departments, especially not the science departments, and definitely not in Miami.”
Geller pointed out that her character needed to be strong and assertive to fit in with the male cast members, yet she thrived in this situation, finding it invigorating to be the sole female actor. She exclaimed excitedly, “In truth, this role is my ideal job!”

In the interview, Geller, along with Christian Slater, Molly Brown, and Patrick Gibson, discussed the unexpected surge in popularity of Dexter, reaching number one on Nielsen ratings for the past two months. The new series, titled “Dexter: Original Sin,” serves as a prequel to the original show that was broadcast on Showtime from 2006 to 2013.
Slater, playing Dexter’s father, commented that the spin-off series enhances the original show by providing additional character insights, even revealing events unknown to Dexter before his birth. He also noted that while connected, they exist in a separate universe, allowing for fresh explorations of new ideas.
In the original series, Michael C. Hall played the role of older Dexter, while Gibson portrays a younger version of the character. During conversations with Hall, Gibson shared his desire to bring a fresh perspective to the character by doing things differently. He acknowledged that the initial version of Dexter was already established by Hall, stating, “This younger Dexter was born before my portrayal. It’s his character, not that he needs me to remind him.”
Dexter: Original Sin will premiere on Paramount+ With Showtime in December.
