Sarah Michelle Gellar Pushes Back on Buffy Reboot Leak: “That’s Not Our Vision”

Sarah Michelle Gellar has addressed the recent leak of script pages for the planned Buffy reboot, clarifying that the pages circulating online don’t represent the actual version of the show Hulu was working on.

While promoting her new movie, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, Sarah Michelle Gellar discussed the unaired Buffy the Vampire Slayer pilot on SiriusXM’s Page Six Radio. She expressed concern that the unfinished pilot might surface online and be unfairly judged, and clarified that the script currently available online isn’t the accurate version.

Gellar says fans are not seeing the real vision

Gellar explained that the leaked footage doesn’t reflect the final version of the reboot, as pilot episodes typically undergo changes and improvements before a show is officially greenlit (according to The Hollywood Reporter).

I’m actually hoping the pilot isn’t fully produced, because then everyone will have something to say about it. The pilot isn’t complete yet – we didn’t finish a whole season and then stop. It’s different from something like the Batgirl movie, which was finished but never released. We intentionally made just a pilot episode first, especially with new characters, to see how it would work. You learn a lot from a pilot and can make improvements. Usually, the first version of a pilot isn’t even shown – it’s a way to test things out and learn. The original Buffy pilot, for example, was completely different from the final show, with a different Willow and a different overall feel. That’s the purpose of a pilot – it’s a learning experience.

Gellar explained that the new ‘Buffy’ series was still being developed, and she’s worried fans might form opinions based on incomplete or leaked drafts that don’t accurately represent the show’s intended direction.

I’ve come across a leaked script online, but it’s inaccurate. It’s disappointing, and I’m asking fans: if you find a leaked version, please don’t read it, as it doesn’t reflect our intended story.

Gellar says Buffy deserves respect

Gellar has been vocal since the show ended because she believes Buffy deserves to be treated with respect. She feels obligated to defend the series when she sees it not receiving that respect.

She ended by encouraging fans to stream Buffy and go see her new movie.

If you want to help, there are two simple things you can do: watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer and go see my film. That’s all I’m asking for right now.

Hulu still canceled it

Despite Joss Whedon’s support for how the pilot was made, Hulu decided not to continue with the Buffy: New Sunnydale series.

Gellar had already stated the project was off the table, and reports indicated the reboot went through several changes before Disney decided not to move forward with it.

Although Gellar clarified the leaked script wasn’t the complete version, the main issue persists: Hulu had concerns about the project and ultimately decided to cancel it.

Disney responds

A Disney spokesperson said on Wednesday that they’ve enjoyed a strong and productive working relationship with Chloé, Sarah, and Gail, acknowledging their impressive history and collaborative spirit. The decision not to proceed with a new TV series isn’t a judgment of the creative team, including Lilla and Nora, but rather a separate business decision.

The leak debate is not going away

Gellar’s statements probably won’t calm the negative reaction; in fact, they’re making things worse. Fans are upset about leaked script pages, reports of changes being made, and now Gellar confirming the online version doesn’t match what she and the creators intended.

The cancellation of the Buffy reboot is now part of a larger discussion about the show’s history – what it meant to viewers, what happened during its production, and if a new version ever had a chance of success.
