As a seasoned horror movie enthusiast who’s seen more slasher flicks than I can count, I must say that the upcoming sequel of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” has me both excited and skeptical. On one hand, it’s fantastic to see some original cast members returning, especially Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who played characters that were truly iconic in the horror genre back in the ’90s.
The popular horror franchise “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is renowned for its chills, so it’s no wonder another sequel is on the way. It was officially announced in February 2023 that a new installment of the series was being developed, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. potentially reprising their original characters.
As I, the excited gamer, proudly announce, it’s me who’ll be at the helm, directing this upcoming thriller! Leah McKendrick and I collaborated on the idea, and she’s crafting the script. The mastermind behind it all, Neal H. Moritz, will produce. It’s shaping up to be a fresh take on the Scream (2022) formula, featuring familiar elements woven into a tale starring a younger cast. Keep your calendars marked, we’re set to drop this chiller on July 18, 2025!
In recent updates, the new movie has added Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette to its cast. Additionally, Billy Campbell, Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King are also set to appear. Freddie Prinze Jr. has been confirmed for a return from the previous films, while Jennifer Love Hewitt is in negotiations to rejoin him.
With many original actors coming back for the sequel, there has been speculation about Sarah Michelle Gellar’s potential involvement. However, Gellar herself has indicated that it is unlikely she will reprise her role because her character, Helen Shivers, met her end in the initial film.
This was before she shared a photo from the set on her private Instagram profile

There’s a chance she might appear in the film, but it seems more likely that she’s merely visiting, given her marriage to Freddie Prinze Jr. and close friendship with the director. This explanation isn’t particularly puzzling.
The 1997 film “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” helmed by director Jim Gillespie, was penned by Kevin Williamson (of “Scream” fame) and adapted from Lois Duncan’s novel. This movie spawned sequels in 1998 and 2006, but only Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. appeared in the first sequel. The third movie, titled “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,” was a direct-to-video release featuring a fresh cast.
