As a die-hard film enthusiast, I must share some bittersweet news about Hocus Pocus 3: it seems we’ll need to keep our broomsticks firmly planted on the ground, as progress on the movie isn’t exactly zipping along. Sarah Jessica Parker herself recently dropped an update that might leave a few of us sorcerers feeling slightly deflated, as it appears the return of the Sanderson Sisters may be further off than we had hoped.
no concrete news yet.
She expressed, “Regarding the expats in London, there won’t be further developments, at least for now, but we’re considering doing something about it.” Later, she emphasized, “We’re contemplating taking action.” She also hinted that some discussions were taking place discreetly, although she didn’t reveal much about the nature of these talks or who else was involved. However, it seems plausible that Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy might be part of those discussions.
In 2023, Disney revealed their intentions for a third installment of the beloved film “Hocus Pocus” following the massive popularity of its sequel on Disney+, which premiered in September 2022. The second part garnered positive critic reviews and even set new streaming records.
Currently, writer Jen D’Angelo has revealed that production on the third film is underway, but they are still in the early stages of development. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she said, “We’re still brainstorming and working on the story.” Additionally, D’Angelo shared that she has numerous ideas for new characters and potential plotlines. She hinted that Hannah Waddingham’s character from the second movie, the “mother witch,” could have a larger role in the upcoming film.
In her words, “We’ve only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham’s mother witch.”
In a June 2024 interview, Bette Midler mentioned that Disney was proceeding with the film “with great care and sensitivity.” This implies that although there’s enthusiasm for the project, its development appears to be advancing at a deliberate and gradual pace.
Writer Jen D’Angelo disclosed that original cast member Thora Birch, known for her role as Dani in the first movie, won’t be part of the third film. She shared that she had hoped to bring Birch back and even developed multiple scenarios where her character could reappear, such as engaging in a battle against the Sanderson Sisters. However, these concepts didn’t materialize successfully.
In another development, Omri Katz, the initial actor who portrayed Max in the original movie, expressed his enthusiasm to Entertainment Weekly about potentially reprising his role if Disney reached out. He stated, “Absolutely, I’d be on board if Disney extended an invitation. It would be a privilege to come back, ideally with some of my former co-stars, and contribute something enjoyable to the series!
Sarah Jessica Parker previously expressed her enthusiasm for Kathy Najimy’s suggestion of animating the third movie in the series, stating that it could be a smart, fun, and innovative idea. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2022, she mentioned that she would be open to discussing this possibility, provided that Najimy and Bette Midler were on board as well.
At present, it’s undecided whether we’ll see a third installment of Hocus Pocus. Parker hints that there’s enthusiasm for it, but as of now, no concrete steps are being taken. Patient fans will need to stay tuned to find out if the witches of Salem will soar once more.
