Sarah Jessica Parker had expressed a desire to leave Sex and the City before the series began filming, long before she took on the role of Carrie Bradshaw. In a recent interview, she disclosed that she pleaded with her agents to help her exit the show when it was chosen by HBO in the late 1990s.
During an interview with her fellow actor Kristin Davis on her “Are You a Charlotte?” podcast, Parker shared that despite enjoying the initial filming of the pilot in 1997, she became anxious pondering about potential future developments.
She admitted, “When the series got renewed, I became anxious. I felt as if I exclaimed, ‘I’m not cut out for television! I doubt this lifestyle is right for me’.
In a conversation with her representatives, she expressed her discomfort by saying, “Could you find a way for me to be exempted from this arrangement?” To avoid having to work on TV, she proposed taking on several movie projects for HBO instead, in order to meet the requirements of her contract.
However, her representatives managed to calm her down from a state of alarm and persuaded her to commit for a year, assuring her that they would remove her from the show if she chose not to carry on.
She shared with Davis that it was quite challenging to articulate her feelings, and it even felt somewhat disheartening. What seemed particularly daunting to her at the moment was the concept of repeating the same tasks continually. At that point in time, Parker believed that dedicating herself to a series would limit her ability to engage in various other activities.
Similarly to many others, she too found the concept “completely unacceptable” since it catapulted her into fame’s limelight. However, once she began working with them, she grew fond of the crew, and yearned to be on the filming set each and every day.
The TV show “Sex and the City” earned her an Emmy for best actress in a comedy series (leading role). The show finished airing in 2004, yet there were two additional films released as part of the franchise in 2008 and 2010.
At present, Parker is additionally playing the role of Bradshaw in the subsequent series titled “And Just Like That”. The third season of the show is set to debut towards the end of this month.
