As a dedicated follower of Hollywood’s history and its iconic figures, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Sandy Bresler, a man who not only shaped the career of one of cinema’s greatest actors but also left an indelible mark on the talent representation industry.
Sandy Bresler, often recognized as Jack Nicholson‘s long-term exclusive agent in Hollywood, passed away at the age of 87 on August 1st, in Santa Monica. According to a family statement, he set the benchmark for exceptional talent representation through personal curation.
Back in the day, I, a star-struck rookie, found myself face to face with the legendary Nicholson – quite unexpectedly, we were both part of California’s Air National Guard. Fast forward a year, after joining the prestigious William Morris Agency as a humble secretary, fate had it that I was given the privilege to represent this iconic actor in 1961.
At the 1999 Golden Globe Awards when Nicholson was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award, he thanked Bresler in his speech, stating, “There’s only one agent who has stood by me, directed me, endured my mood swings, my dramatic outbursts and more.”
In his talk, the actor playfully joked about momentarily forgetting Sandy’s name, then enthusiastically referred to him as “my buddy and fellow warrior!”
Bresler’s client list also included actors Judd Hirsch, Randy Quaid, Louise Linton, and more.
Born on January 20, 1937, Bresler was the offspring of Jerry Bresler, a film producer known for creating movies like The Vikings (1958), Gidget Goes to Rome (1963), Casino Royale (1967), and a 1943 short that won an Oscar.
During the course of his professional journey, Bresler co-founded two agencies: Bresler-Kelly & Associates with John Kelly, and later The Artists Agency (originally Bresler, Wolff, Cota & Levington). He also collaborated with CMA and ICM to effectively manage his clients’ interests.
For three decades, he was a member of the Board of Directors for the Association of Talent Agents, and for over a term, he held the position of President within this organization.
After Bresler’s passing, Karen Stuart, the executive director of ATA, praised his significant contributions to furthering the goals of our association and the broader talent management sector.
“Many looked up to Sandy as their guide, and his influence will continue to resonate for quite some time,” she remarked.
Bresler leaves behind his wife of five decades, Nancy; son Eric; daughter Jennifer; as well as grandsons Brandon and Jonah. His funeral service is set for Tuesday, August 6, at midday, at Hillside Memorial Park, located at 6001 West Sentinel’s Avenue, Los Angeles, California.
