Sandra Bernhard Reflects On Losing Touch With Singer Madonna: ‘We Couldn’t Maintain The Friendship’

Reflecting upon the poignant tale of Sandra Bernhard and Madonna’s friendship, I can’t help but reminisce about those days when their bond was as iconic as their fashion statements. As someone who lived through the late ’80s and early ’90s, I must confess that their friendship was a beacon of inspiration for many of us struggling artists and outsiders like myself.

Sandra Bernhard reminisced about past friendships, particularly her close bond with Madonna, which weakened over time. Discussing this in an episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast “Dinner’s On Me” on July 30th, the actress from Roseanne revealed details about their once strong friendship dynamic that eventually faded.

When Ferguson brought up how their “break in friendship” could have been more challenging for her compared to Madonna, he pondered if a reunion between them might prove difficult.

Bernhard replied, “That would work, though I must admit, I’m not sure what it entails.” She went on, “You know, I dislike dwelling on the past, as it brings back memories of a wonderful period. The late ’80s, for instance, when I was performing my one-woman show in New York and frequently appearing on *Letterman*. Honestly, everything felt so new and exciting.”

Why did the two stars drift apart?

It seems that the falling out between Sandra Bernhard and Madonna, according to Bernhard herself, can be attributed to the strains and spotlight that came with their well-known friendship. Given Madonna’s status as a major figure and her concern for her public persona, Sandra Bernhard expressed discomfort with the relentless public attention.

Additionally, she mentioned that she’s always maintained an organic and genuine demeanor, preferring personal character over any predefined public persona.

Later on, she added that Madonna tends to avoid people who strongly resemble her. Consequently, her relationships often don’t endure.

Bernhard remarked, “I’m unsure about her current state, she could be just as before, I can’t say for certain. However, no one remains unchanged once they become parents; life alters us. Yet, during that period, our friendship seemed perfectly timed.”

More on Sandra Bernhard and Madonna’s friendship

Bernhard confessed that she had moments of sadness because their friendship seemed to grow distant over time, which is unfortunate since they couldn’t keep it going as before. The friendship between Bernhard and Madonna was widely publicized in the late ’80s. They made headlines when they jointly appeared on Late Night with David Letterman in 1988, donning matching outfits to add a striking touch to their performance. However, over time, the two were seen less frequently together, and eventually, it became apparent that they had grown apart as friends.

The pair were often referred to as best friends forever (BFFs) and even coordinated their outfits for the event they attended together. In an interview on Jess Rothschild’s Hot Takes & Deep Dives podcast, Bernhard noted that it seemed strange, given the lack of social media and modern companies, that there were so few photos of them together compared to contemporary celebrity friendships.
