Sam Witwer Confirms Maul: Shadow Lord Timeline and Teases Dark New Star Wars Series

Enthusiasts of Star Wars have received some thrilling updates! An upcoming animated series titled “Maul: Shadow Lord” is on its way, with Darth Maul being the main focus. Known favorite antagonist, Darth Maul will once again be voiced by Sam Witwer in this production.

At Star Wars Celebration in Japan, Witwer disclosed certain aspects about the upcoming show and explained its position within the Star Wars chronology.

A year has passed since The Clone Wars, leaving a scenario where both the clones and Maul’s group suffered heavy losses. As Witwer explained, while Maul still has followers, his organization is not what it once was, making the situation grim. Fear and uncertainty are prevalent among everyone due to the devastation. However, Maul seems to be watching the rise of an empire that he had foreseen, but didn’t expect to unfold in such a way.

Witwer clarified that Maul was aware of part of his master’s overall scheme, not all of it. He had certain knowledge, yet there were aspects he remained unaware of. In essence, Maul understood that the Empire would arrive, but he didn’t foresee this specific event.

At Celebration event, spectators were treated to an early glimpse of the trailer. When prompted about his impressions regarding the clip, Witwer commented: “I found it enjoyable. I thought it was well-done. It’s great to offer a preview of what the series will entail. For instance, the visual aesthetic and sound design are impressive, and we’re pushing boundaries compared to our previous work.

He noted that since the series presents events from Maul’s perspective, it gives a distinct appearance and feel to all scenes.

If you’re creating a performance where Maul is the central perspective, it means you need to adapt your usual approach to reflect how he perceives the world. Consequently, it will have a slightly darker tone, and there will be an increased sense of danger in its appearance, sound, and overall feel.

Witwer also talked about what drives Maul in this new chapter.

Maul, who was schooled in the art of using the Force, hails from a period rich with enchantment, dragons, and knights. Currently, he observes as an empire systematically removes magic and vibrancy from the cosmos. Originality is being suppressed, and there’s a shift towards uniformity and machinery.

Maul is starting to question what’s happening around him.

He’s saying, ‘Hold on now… He’s inquiring about this situation. Could it be that he intends to take action? To be honest, it’s not straightforward. Is there anything he can do here? It appears no one can.

Witwer also reminded fans that Maul had one clear mission: destroy Jedi.

He surveilled his surroundings with the clear intention to eradicate the Jedi Knights. This was particularly evident during the Clone Wars, and while many believe the number of Jedi he killed is known, it’s likely much higher. We suggested that he collaborated with Savage Opress in this rampage, but their actions may have been more extensive than commonly assumed.

Now, the Jedi are gone. What does Maul do next?

This fresh collection offers Star Wars enthusiasts an opportunity to delve deeper into the interim happenings between major events within the Star Wars universe. Shows such as The Clone Wars and Rebels have played a significant role in providing additional context, thereby enhancing the narrative’s depth. If these shows were absent, fans would be deprived of substantial details like the comprehensive backstory between Obi-Wan and Maul.

The character “Maul: Shadow Lord” is currently being worked on, and a launch date has not been announced as of now. While we wait, fans can delve into Maul’s tale by streaming “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” which is available on Disney+ at the moment.
