Sam Moore, Grammy Winning R&B Legend Passes Away at 89 in Florida

Noted R&B singer Sam Moore, one-half of the famed duo Sam & Dave, has passed away at the age of 89, leaving a lasting impact on the music world.

On January 10th, in Coral Gables, Florida, it was confirmed by Joyce Moore, both his wife and longtime manager, that Moore had passed away following a surgical procedure. At this time, the precise reason behind his demise remains undetermined, as conveyed to The New York Times by Joyce Moore.

1935 saw the birth of Moore on October 12, in Miami. It wasn’t until later in the 1950s that he began to carve out a niche for himself in singing. A serendipitous encounter with Dave Prater in the early ’60s sparked their collaboration as a duo. In 1964, Moore signed with Atlantic Records, kickstarting a career that would go on to significantly shape R&B music during the 1960s.

Among their many popular tunes are Hold On, I’m Comin’, I Thank You, Soul Man, and others. They were even awarded a Grammy for Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental. Yet, the duo decided to go their separate ways in 1970. However, Sam later released an album as a solo artist titled Plenty Good Lovin’ in 2002. During his solo years, he also shared the stage with musicians like Bruce Springsteen.

As per the report, Sam & Dave’s final joint performance occurred in 1981. Subsequently, they didn’t communicate with each other. During this time, both individuals grappled with heroin dependency. However, Moore managed to break free from his addiction by 1983 and subsequently dedicated his efforts towards aiding others battling addiction issues.

Sam Moore is mourned by his daughter Michelle, his spouse Joyce, as well as his grandkids Tash and Misha.
