As a devoted admirer who has followed Robin Williams‘ extraordinary journey, I cannot help but marvel at his exceptional humanity. Reflecting upon Sally Field’s heartwarming account of their time together during the filming of Mrs. Doubtfire, it is apparent that Williams’ kindness transcended the silver screen.
Approaching the 10th anniversary of Robin Williams’s passing, Sally Field affectionately reminisced about him as a deeply empathetic and perceptive individual. The actress shared that following her father’s demise, Williams took care of the necessary arrangements allowing her to depart from the set of Mrs. Doubtfire at an opportune moment.
In 1993, Vanity Fair discovered that she found out about her father’s demise while engaged in a comedy project. The actor, then 77 years old, reminisced, “I was utterly distraught.” She further explained, “I struggled to maintain composure on set. I wasn’t weeping. Robin approached me, guided me off the set, and asked, ‘Are you alright?'”
At that moment, the actor who portrayed Norma Rae informed Williams about her father’s demise. She recalled him exclaiming, “Goodness gracious, we have to get you off set immediately!”, demonstrating his effectiveness in fulfilling this task, which was no small feat on a large-scale production.
In my role as a lifestyle guide, I’d like to share an intriguing anecdote about Robin Williams that I had the privilege to learn. Throughout the day, I found myself surrounded by his energy as he filmed nearby. With a plan in mind, I could have retreated to my home, contacted my brother, and organized my thoughts. However, what unfolded was a side of Robin that most people rarely got to witness – a man who was deeply sensitive and perceptive.
Regarding Williams’s demise, Field admitted that she finds it hard to believe and persists in viewing him as “present.” She maintains the belief that Williams could not have left and is still with us, stating that she can sense his presence. “I feel him,” she declared.
In a heartfelt manner, it wasn’t just Robin Williams who was infusing love and thoughtfulness into the character of Mrs. Doubtfire; this dedication extended to honoring Field as well. Reflecting on those times, Chris Columbus, the director of Mrs. Doubtfire, recalled that by the end of the first week of filming, the late star had already familiarized himself with every single member of the cast and crew.
He revealed, “He had learned everybody’s name, from the caterers to the production assistants” adding that he would remember and crack a joke if someone had a peculiarity. “It made everyone feel like he was their friend and put everyone in a fantastic mood,” he recalled.
On an unforgettable August 11, 2014, I received news that shook me to my core – our beloved Oscar-winning actor was found lifeless in his California abode. In the end, it was suicide that took him away from us, as confirmed by the final autopsy report. He succumbed to asphyxia caused by hanging, and was battling a cruel condition known as diffuse Lewy body dementia. Even now, I can’t help but replay those tragic moments, mourning for the man who brought so much joy to my life through his captivating performances.
Last month, as it would have been his father’s 73rd birthday, Zak, the eldest son, honored him on social media platforms. He posted a heartfelt message on Instagram alongside a photo of himself with his dad. The caption read: “I remember you for the optimism and happiness you spread throughout the world. It seems like every week someone tells me how you guided them through difficult times or challenging moments. I’m immensely proud and thankful to be your son. You will always be in my heart.”
