Stepping into the limelight for me is none other than Sadie Sink, in the highly-anticipated post-apocalyptic rock opera, O’Dessa, premiering on Hulu. The initial trailer unveils my character, a farm girl venturing through a mysterious and perilous city where music exerts an almost mystical influence.
The movie, crafted by Geremy Jasper (known for Patti Cake$), narrates the story of O’Dessa who embarks on a journey to retrieve a treasured family artifact. During her travels, she stumbles upon an enigmatic romantic figure and finds herself entangled in a realm controlled by a quirky and cruel showbiz tycoon, portrayed by Murray Bartlett. Alongside these actors, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Regina Hall also feature prominently in the film.
In her conversation with Variety last year, Sink confessed that accepting the role was a challenging ordeal. She admitted, “There was this instance where I was like, ‘Whoa, I can’t believe I agreed to this. Gosh, what have I gotten myself into?!’
Even though she felt jittery, she managed to overcome the difficulties of giving a performance. “I’d perform a song, but nobody else would realize that I was terrified inside, yet in my mind, it was as if I was thinking, ‘This isn’t my voice. I can’t sing this song like this.’ … There were days when things seemed particularly tough. But sometimes, it felt as though I had no fear at all and was singing in front of a large audience!
The movie trailer hints at its musical aspects, as Sink’s character ponders on her father’s advice: “My daddy always said my singing could illuminate the darkness and alter things.” A different scene features Harrison Jr.’s character expressing, “When you sang to me earlier tonight, it made me recall how breathtaking some moments can be.
Love is undeniably the most potent force, as portrayed in O’DESSA, an extraordinary rock opera written and directed by Geremy Jasper. This captivating production features Sadie Sink and Kelvin Harrison Jr., along with Murray Bartlett and Regina Hall. Catch it first at SXSW this March, or stream it on Hulu starting March 13th. #ODessaFilm
