After the blockbuster success of Deadpool & Wolverine, earning over $1.3 billion at the box office and setting numerous records, Ryan Reynolds hints at the future of the character known as the Merc With A Mouth. He suggests that the character’s unique appeal would be lost if he were part of either the Avengers or the X-Men.
On a Wednesday, Reynolds graced the 2025 TIME100 Summit held in New York City. Notably, it was brought up during this event that he had earlier expressed his belief that Deadpool thrives best in a secondary role.
Deadpool returning to the MCU
It’s been noted that Marvel plans to release several films featuring the X-Men, including ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. When asked about Deadpool’s potential role in these films, Reynolds was questioned.
Reynolds responded:
“I do think so.”
What works best for Deadpool?
Reynolds then went on to explain how how he thinks Deadpool works best:
In my opinion, for your character to be convincing with such unique dialogue, you might need to strip him down to bare essentials. I mean, imagine him without any features – no skin, no face, just covered in scars. He’s bald and constantly wears a mask as a symbol of his shame.
Path to redemption
The actor also explained his approach to the three movies:
In the first film, I took control of the narrative and used the character to convey a tale of shame. For the second movie, I focused on family dynamics, and now, in this third installment, I’m exploring themes of redemption.
I believe we’ve truly mastered the art of redemption; it’s one of those quintessential American traits, don’t you think?
It’s similar to realizing that you’ve been longing for something or someone without even knowing it.
More Wesley Snipes Blade
Reynolds also again says he wants to see more from Wesley Snipes:
To admire individuals similar to the characters, such as Blade portrayed by Wesley Snipes, who is currently someone deserving of a climactic third act. In other words, he’s an incredibly popular and talented actor on the big screen.
The way you describe the reaction people have when he appears on screen in the film is really captivating, and it’s a sensation I crave even more. I believe I could replicate that impact as a secondary character.
Something new is in the works
Reynolds himself admits that he’s working on a piece with the appearance of having numerous characters involved.
I’m writing a little something right now that is—I don’t know—an ensemble
No Avengers or X-Men
Reynolds adds that he doesn’t think Deadpool should even become an Avenger or an X-Men:
You know, I like that he’s isolated.
As a diehard cinema enthusiast, I must admit, if Deadpool ever joins the ranks of the Avengers or the X-Men, it would be the pinnacle of his cinematic existence. But let’s face it, that level of wish fulfillment might not come to fruition anytime soon.
