Ryan Reynolds has been a familiar face in movies and TV shows since the 1990s, but he didn’t become a major star immediately. He spent the early 2000s appearing in various comedies before getting noticed in the 2004 Marvel film Blade: Trinity.
Though he worked in romantic comedies and action movies for years, it was ultimately the superhero genre that truly launched his career. His path with Marvel wasn’t easy; his first attempt at playing Deadpool in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine was widely criticized – even by Reynolds himself.
He also faced a disappointment with 2011’s Green Lantern, a movie he’s openly admitted he regrets making. But everything changed in 2016 when he finally got to play Deadpool his way, perfectly embodying the witty, self-aware, and unconventional hero that fans now love.
Even though Ryan Reynolds is closely associated with his Deadpool persona, he recently revealed that Free Guy is actually the project he’s most proud of. Sharing a magazine cover featuring the 2021 film, Reynolds called it his “all-time favorite” and described making it as a pure joy. That enthusiasm was shared by audiences and critics alike, helping the movie earn over $331 million worldwide.
I absolutely love this cover of Free Guy by Total Film! It’s honestly my favorite movie I’ve ever been a part of – a pure burst of happiness. And a shout-out to Jodie Comer! 👕

Free Guy is a fun, action-packed movie that feels like a celebration of video games. It centers around a regular bank teller who discovers he’s actually a background character in a wild, Grand Theft Auto-like game. Instead of just accepting this, he decides to take control and become the hero of his world. The movie’s strong cast – including Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery, and Joe Keery – really brought the exciting and colorful game world to life.
Ryan Reynolds continues to be incredibly active in Hollywood, juggling starring roles in big films with his work as a producer and businessman. His latest project, the action movie Mayday, will be available on Apple TV+ starting September 4th. The film is directed by the team behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and features Reynolds as a Navy pilot alongside Kenneth Branagh. Reynolds has said this role is special because it allows him to play a character who needs to be rescued – a departure from his usual heroic roles.
Following his recent experiences, Ryan Reynolds is currently prioritizing the development of Deadpool 4. Many in the entertainment industry believe this is a strategic move to regain audience connection after a year of increased public attention. Although he’s suggested a future team-based X-Men project, Deadpool remains his most dependable path to success. He’s also lending his voice to Animal Friends, an R-rated animated/live-action comedy starring Jason Momoa and Aubrey Plaza.
Ryan Reynolds is demonstrating his impact goes beyond acting, with successful ventures like owning Wrexham AFC and running his production company, Maximum Effort.
