As a die-hard Marvel fan who has seen every single movie multiple times, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider didn’t make an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. I mean, come on! The man embodied the character in such a spectacular way back in 2007 that it feels like a crime not to have him return for this epic crossover event.
In a fresh take on the narrative, Marvel’s recent hit movie, Deadpool and Wolverine, not only breathed new life into the franchise but also paid tribute to Marvel films previously produced by 20th Century Fox, such as Fantastic Four and Blade. When Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy embarked on the creation of Deadpool and Wolverine, their goal was to resurrect those heroes who had seemingly vanished!
1. Chris Evans once again took on the role of Johnny Storm (also known as the Human Torch) from Fantastic Four, Jennifer Garner reappeared as Elektra, and Wesley Snipes resurfaced as Blade – all iconic characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Among these heroes, they are now the oldest, surpassing Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Additionally, Channing Tatum made an appearance as Gambit; however, a planned standalone movie for this character was postponed due to production complications.
The film had more than enough surprise cameos, but it turns out there was gonna be more! In a recent interview with Collider, Reynolds revealed that Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider almost made the list of cameos.
When inquired if discussions regarding Ghost Rider had taken place among the team, Reynolds responded by saying, “Indeed, a conversation about it definitely happened.” Yet, he remained coy about additional information, merely stating, “Well, yes, but not really.”
It’s a no-brainer that Cage reprising Johnny Blaze would have been iconic. In fact, unlike many other superhero films out of the MCU umbrella, Ghost Rider had a great audience reception. Since Reynolds didn’t go into details, we’ll never know why Cage didn’t step back into the shoes of his iconic character.
It’s possible that the actor from Face/Off declined the cameo appearance, following the cancellation of his role as Superman in Tim Burton’s movie The Flash, which received a lot of attention. It’s also plausible that this incident may have caused some bitterness for Cage and potentially influenced his choice to turn down a cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters.
