Ryan Reynolds Pitched an R-Rated STAR WARS Project to Disney

The latest series on Disney+, titled “Andor”, has been the maturest take on Star Wars in about half a century, though it didn’t quite reach an R-rating. Its adult themes pushed the boundaries at times, but stopped short of being strictly for adults. However, Ryan Reynolds believes it might be time to take that leap. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, during his recent appearance on “The Box Office” podcast, Reynolds proposed a potential R-rated Star Wars project to Disney. Unlike his popular R-rated productions for Disney like Deadpool and Wolverine, he wouldn’t star in this hypothetical project, but would instead produce it. Here’s what he shared about his idea:

I proposed the idea to Disney: “What if we create an R-rated version of Star Wars? It doesn’t have to be centered around well-known characters. Instead, there’s a vast array of characters that could be utilized. By ‘R-rated’, I don’t mean filled with explicit content. Rather, I envision it as a vehicle for deeper emotions. I often ponder why studios are hesitant to take risks like this. I wouldn’t necessarily want to act in it, but I’d love to produce, write, or be involved behind the scenes.” I believe such intellectual properties thrive on scarcity and surprise. Although we don’t experience scarcity with Star Wars due to Disney+, there’s still room for surprising audiences.

As a film enthusiast, I’ve always admired Ryan Reynolds’ outstanding performances, particularly in Deadpool and Wolverine. One could easily speculate that with such success under his belt, he might be given control over the Death Star by Disney and Lucasfilm. However, it appears that’s not the path they’re choosing. The reason being, Star Wars has always been a family-oriented brand since its inception, and Lucasfilm might find it apprehensive to venture into purely adult content.

Initially, no Marvel Cinematic Universe film carried an R-rating until the duo of Deadpool and Wolverine graced our screens, and they seemed to rake in all the wealth on Earth. Perhaps Ryan Reynolds’ involvement could ease the shock a bit. Now, I can’t help but wonder if there isn’t a fantastic horror concept for Star Wars that remains untapped. With Lucasfilm hinting at zombie Stormtroopers in Clone Wars and Ahsoka, perhaps it’s high time we explore something along those lines. If anyone could pull off such a venture, I believe it would be Ryan Reynolds.
