I don’t believe I can make him an underdog again in the same way as before, creating a context where he seems less powerful.

It seems to me that if he returns, it’ll likely be in another filmmaker’s project. Channing Tatum was eager to portray Gambit, and I’d be more than happy to play a supporting role in his movie or any other.

It’s likely that Tatum will be delighted by this news, given that he’s been actively advocating for his own Marvel Cinematic Universe film and a lasting role in the revamped X-Men squad over the past few months.
