Eric Gilliland, renowned comedy writer who significantly contributed to The Conners and Roseanne, passed away at the age of 65 after a long struggle with colon cancer. Over the past days, heartfelt tributes have been pouring in for this experienced TV writer and producer. On Sunday, Ryan Reynolds, a close friend of Gilliland’s, paid an emotional tribute to him.

On September 3, the actor who played Deadpool and Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds, used Instagram to recall their shared moments and express his sorrow over Gilliland’s passing. In his post, he wrote, “He was kind-hearted, soft-spoken, and hilariously funny. It’s a tragedy that he is no longer with us, and it’s even more tragic that many people won’t get to know the wonderful person he was.”

In the original post, there were multiple images, or a series (carousel). The first and second images were individual photos of the late comedy writer. The third image was a picture of him alongside Reynolds, and the final image displayed a group photo that included Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, director Shawn Levy, and the comedy writer.

1984 graduate of Northwestern University, hailing from Illinois, Gilliland embarked on his comedic journey post-graduation. He made his mark as a comedy writer for the widely acclaimed ABC sitcom, Roseanne, where he worked from 1992 to 1996. His contributions to the show have left an indelible impact on television writers.

He soon rose to the position of executive producer for the show, and he subsequently produced shows including My Boys, The Connors, and That ’70s Show as a consultant producer.

Throughout his professional journey, Eric Gilliland garnered several accolades. In 1994, he earned a nomination for the WGA Award due to his contributions in Roseanne. More recently, in 2019, he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for his work on The Was Was? Show, a children’s program.

Steve Levitan, one of the creators behind Modern Family, shared reminiscences of Gilliland on Facebook. Reflecting on their past, Levitan recalled their days in high school when they were involved in plays and comedic acts, and he pondered over their mutual appreciation for classic humor.

Eric Gilliland, a former producer at Campside Media and a cherished friend, recounts to PEOPLE that their friendship began when they worked together as writers’ assistants on Roseanne. “Eric was like the Magnet for Friendship,” says Mark McAdam, attracting everyone from teachers and chefs to artists and West Village residents, as well as Hollywood elites. He made us all feel part of a community.”

In my perspective, the closing of Gilliland’s remarkable journey marks an era filled with laughter for many. His exceptional talent in crafting humorous, engaging content for television has left an indelible impact not only on viewers but also on fellow writers like myself.
